Clark Jay Wilson 27 Oct 3:26:04 2002

I am looking for information on: STANDLEY or STANLEY, WILSON, MOSS and COLLIS families that lived in Cass and Morgan County, IL. from about 1836 to 1880. They are likely related to my WILSON family.

THOMAS STANLEY was born Abt. 1820 in Tennessee. He married MARY WILSON, daughter of JAMES WILSON and MARY EMORY. She was born Abt. 1825 in Ohio.

Estate Administrations
Probate Court
Morgan County Illinois

Stanley, Thomas Number: 2636, died intestate, Administrator or Executor: Mary Stanley

i. JOHN STANLEY, b. Abt. 1842, Illinois.
ii. LANDON STANLEY, b. Abt. 1844, Illinois.
iii. ELIZABETH STANDLEY, b. 29 June 1820, Illinois; d. 12 January 1901; m. JOHN BRATTAIN MOSS; b. 16 July 1816; d. 13 April 1900.

John Moss and his wife Elizabeth are buried in the Walnut Grove Cemetery (Moss Cemetery) in Morgan County, Illinois. This cemetery is located just Northwest of Jacksonville on the old Concord Rd.
I believe that the Standleys are connected through the family of my GGG grandfather JAMES WILSON and his wife, MARY EMORY. A daughter of James Wilson and Mary Emory, also named Mary, was married to Thomas Stanley. The Wilson and Stanley families were neighbors during the 1840-1850s in Concord Township, Morgan County, IL. The 1850 Morgan County Census has Mary Emory Wilson living with the Thomas Stanley family along with another daughter of James Wilson and Mary Emory, a Sarah Wilson, who later married a Daniel W. Collies.

JAMES WILSON was born Abt. 1780 in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, and died Abt. 1860 in Illinois. He married MARY EMORY. She was born Abt. 1784 in Delaware.

James Wilson with his wife, Mary Emory, migrated along with many of his family members from Pennsylvania and West Virginia (about 1780 to 1805) to Ohio (about 1830 to 1836) and then to Illinois. There is evidence that many of his children and their families were living in the Morgan, Cass and Scott Counties area of Illinois from about 1836 to 1870. It is probable that James lived his final years near his children in this area.

A 1871 affidavit states that Mary Stanley was alive in Cass County, Illinois in that year.

A friend is trying to find some record of the erection of a house in Philadelphia township.  He thinks construction took place from 1832 to 1872 and the builder's/owner's name is Virgin, George Virgin.  Surely, in those days a house of this size would have been a structure of public note?  Would Cass County Histories be any help?  I steered him toward the courthouse.  Was I wrong?

Joyce Rauschenberger 20 Aug 3:03:55 2002

Could someone please tell me what the name of the church Rev. Father Meckell was pastor/priest of in 1897?

I have my ggUncle Pius Neff's obituary and Rev. Father Meckell performed the funeral services, but they were held at the Neff home - not a church and no cemetery is listed in the newspaper article.  Only that he would be buried in the "village cemetery".  ...guess they didn't think there'd ever be more than one cemetery in Chandlerville back in 1897.......

It would be a Catholic Church.  In the article, Father Meckell described Pius Neff as   "It may be truly said of him, he was the pillar of the church in this community."  He gave his time, his money, and of all he possessed to establish and maintain the Catholic church here.  He gave up the upper room for a place of worship, and was looked up to be all the congregation as the recognized leader and advisor. "

I would like to contact this church to see if they have records of Pius' children's births, marriages or deaths.  Thanks very much for any help you can give!

I am searching for one of my ancestors: George Clouse.

George was born in 1842 in Pennsylvania - most likely either Donnegall or Oakland Twp, Butler County.  His parents were Michael (Klaus) Clouse and Maria Eva Schmidt Clouse.

I have a copy of the 1860 census taken in Oakland Twp which shows him still living at home with the rest of the family.  But in 1887, when Michael died, George's receipt of inheritance lists his residence as Chandlersville, IL.

I did a search on your USGenWeb page and found no Clouse or Klaus.  I also did a search for Clause only because George's handwritting on the receipt could be read as C-L-A-U-S-E instead of c-l-o-u-s-e.

I have NO data on George beyond his birth year and am interested in finding his descendants before our family reunion this September.  Any help you could give would be most appreciated.

After 30 plus years of genealogical research on the Gerdes family, I finally am discovering the ancestors of Folkert W. Gerdes who farmed and raised stock in Cass County not too far from the Menard County line  and was a school superintendent and a Cass County Commisioner at the time of his death. Cousins Verne Gerdes of Bath and Audrey Maurice of Quincy and I are working together with much of the research on the ancestors and the living descendents of Folkert's brother in Germany being done by a German genealogist who is the "world's greatest detective."  Some old family histories have Folkert W. Gerdes coming from "near Emden", Ostfriesland Germany while others have him born in Hamburg. Some have him with no known brothers and sisters. He actually had a brother and a sister. His obituary found by Audrey Maurice has him born in "Oltmans Fehr" which is Oltmansfehn with a brother and sister living in Germany. Oltmansfehn is near Ockenhausen in Oestfriesland, Germany. Folkert's birth is recorded in the church records of Ockenhausen.  He came to this country in 1857 with his  cousin Gerd Gerhard Gerdes. Gerd had a daughter Geesche b. APRIL 4, 1844   she married a Gebhards in Cass County.  Could this be your family too?

Seeking additional info and leads regarding Mary A. Garner Green Bagby of Cass County.

Mary A. Garner, born June 1848, to Methodist Episcopal Rev. Greenbury Garner and his wife, Mary Jane Redman. The Garner family was very involved as ministers for several generations in the Methodist Episcopal Church in Cass and surrounding counties including Schuyler.  Among Mary's relatives who were active in the Church in the area besides her father were her grandfather, Rev. James Garner, uncle, Rev. William S. Garner, brother Rev. Isaac R. Garner (buried in Ashland Cemetery), and brother-in-law Rev. George B. Wolfe to name a few.

Mary A. Garner, first married Charles A. Green on April 12, 1869 in DeWitt County, Illinois. They had a son, Bruce Melvin Green, born November 1869. However, in the 1870 Census for Camden Township, Schuyler County (enumerated July 19, 1870) Mary A. Green and her son are living with her parents. No trace of Charles A. Green is found. Mary’s father had constituted the Camden Circuit of the ME Church as its preacher in 1869.

Mrs. Mary A. Garner Green, second married John Carroll Bagby, October 11, 1875, in Adams County, Illinois. By the time of the 1880 Census for Cass County, Mary is once again living at the home of her father, along with her husband, John Carroll Bagby and son, Bruce Melvin Green.

From 1881 to 1886 Mary and John Bagby lived in Chicago where John was a druggist and had his own company, Bagby & Co. John died December 6, 1889. When the 1900 Census for Ashland Precinct, Cass County, was enumerated, Mary A. Bagby was living with her son Bruce Melvin Green.

Apparently, John and Mary had a daughter, Murtes Bagby. The only two references known related to Murtes are that she is mentioned in Will of her grandfather, William Bagby, dated 23, June 1904. "Secondly: I give and devise to Murtes Bagby, daughter of my deceased son, John C. Bagby, the sum of Five Dollars ($5.00)." The second reference is the Report of the Court that proved in his Will in 1909 that found that Murtes Bagby was deceased at the time the Will was prepared.

I am looking for any information or leads for further details on Murtes Bagby and Mary A. Garner Green Bagby.

As a side note Bruce Melvin Green married Harriet Gaines on January 1, 1905 in Cass County. He died in Cass County, February 23, 1940.

Wonder if some one could look up on 1930 census, Cass County , Charles and Florence Perry and see if Scott Massey was in their house hold  and who else was in their home.  Also there was at one time a church on  5th and State, and Charles was a minister there, would any one have a pix of that church and they lived in a house that was very large and said to have 17 rooms in it, Main and Edwards across the street was CIPA and tanks at one time. Would like pix of that also. At one time Charles and Florence ran a soup kitchen in Beardstown.

1850 Cass Cty Census lists James 40-Ire and Rebecca Thompson 40-Ire as
having the following children.
John -18 brn Ireland
Mitchell-16 brn IL
Eliza J.-11
Robert L.-9
Joseph F.-7
William A.-6
W.M.-3 (possibly )Walter M.

My John married a Anna Garris possibly Mrs. Anna Boyd??? Children to this union Charles and Jane then my Richard born about 1861.

There is a Will #2380 BK D pg #484 in Morgan County records that I am very interested in. Register of Descendents with Wills Morgan Cty, IL also states file#2380 pg 6 says that John died 9 June 1863. This file also stated Ann Thompson as executor.

Can someone look these records up and make me a copy and I will forward money order? I also need to see marriage certificate for John Thompson and Mrs. Anna Boyd to insure this was the correct name for her before she married John Thompson.

I would like to find out more information on this particular lineage of Thompsons since they did come in from Ireland. James and Rebecca may have married in Illinois and may truly not be Johns true mother, since he was born in Ireland not sure??

Rhonda Randolph 16 Apr 12:03:33 2002

I am looking for any information (birth dates, parents, siblings, obits, anything) on James A. Swan and his wife Ellen R. Daily (spelled?) Swan and their children, all of Beardstown, IL. James died on April 26 1899, but I have no idea when or where he was born or who his parents were. I was told at one time he was a river boat pilot.

Ellen died June 15 1896, but again I have no idea when her birth was and who her parents are.

James and Ellen had at least 5 Kids before Ellen passed away: Oscar H.(this was my grandfather and I have information for him), John A., Nettie, Fred, Bertha. There may have been a couple more children but these are the only
ones I am aware of.

James remarried after Ellen's death, I think, but died soon after the remarriage. The children from his and Ellen's marriage were rather young when their parents died so I have to wonder if the parents both died young.

On the ship Gerhard arriving in New Orleans was a Gerdes family which  included GG Gerdes age 42 and his brother F. Gerdes age 23. Also on the ship was the wife of GG Gerdes, a daughter, and an infant who died on the journey and G. G. Gerdes' inlaws the Wichmann's.

G.G. Gerdes was bound for Petersburg, Menard County. If this F. Gerdes is  Folkert W. Gerdes, he ended up farming in Cass County not too distant from the Menard County line.

Has anyone heard of this Gerd Gerdes?? Has anyone heard of a Wichmann or Wiechmann family in Cass or Menard Counties?

Has anyone researched the St. Paul Lutheran Church records in Petersburg and if so, please tell me about it?

Gerdes is listed on the 1880 census  of Cass County as born in Hamburg and the 1870 census as born in Hannover.  He gave up allegiance to the King of Hannover on his naturalization papers filed in Menard County. I am betting on his being born near Emden in the Principality of Hannover rather than being born in Hamburg. This area of Germany is referred to as Oestfriesland. Is anyone else in Cass County researching an ancestor from Ostfriesland or the Emden area?
A cousin tells me that the Gerdes farm was probably closer to Petersburg  than to Virginia and that is why he filed naturalization papers in Petersburg, Menard County.

On the final naturalization papers of my gggrandfather Folkert (Folker) W. Gerdes filed in Menard County, two men testified that Folkert (Folker)  Gerdes was of good character and had resided in the country for at least 5  years and Illinois for at least one year. The names of these men are  written in long hand with fancy hard to read script. but it is clear there  last names are Woldridge and Milhausen. It looks like Eilert Milhausen and  possibly Richard Woldridge. Would anyone know if these men were from Cass  or were they from Menard county? The date was November 1864 on the   naturalization paper.

Folker Gerdes lived in Cass County outside of Chandlerville near the Mt.  Olive Baptist Church and  Pontiac Cemetery,  but went to Menard to file the   papers. I keep asking "why?"

Does anyone know if naturalization papers were typically just a one page  document or if there was usually more than the one page? I received this  one page document from my cousin Verne Gerdes up at Bath who got it from  some family member.

Will appreciate any help, suggestions, or encouragement

Betty Richardson 24 Jan 1:15:38 2002

A written family history had my ancestor's name as Forker W. Gerdes born Oct 23, 1833. I have reviewed all the records I have and decided his name  was more probably Folker W. Gerdes. It is Folker on the statewide marriage  site. It is Folker on his tombstone and in a sketch on his son William Gerdes. It was Folkert W. on his naturalization papers..written so in three
places. His name could be Folkert and he dropped the "t" or it could be   Folker which is a given name in Oesfriesland Germany where he is said to have been born.

His tombstone in Pontiac Cemetery says Folker W. Gerdes died Feb 26, 1884  Aged 49 yrs 4 m & 3 days. If correct, this means he was born Oct. 23 of 1834 instead of 1833. He married Mary Ray in 1863 which means he was 28 when he married. When he died his widow married a William Franken.  Franken's first wife was Gretje Fritzen. Franken and Fritzen are names common in Emden, Oestfriesland. Would like to hear from anyone researching the Franken and Fritzen families or anyone with ancestors from Oestfriesland, Germany.

Betty Richardson 13 Jan 9:21:44 2002

My second great-grandfather was Forker or perhaps Folkert W. Gerdes who was  born October 23, 1833 near Emden Ostfriesland and came to America when he  was 17. He married Mary E. Ray and had several children. He was a farmer  near Mt. Olive Baptist Church and the Pontiac School. He was a county  commissioner at one time and one of the directors of the Pontiac School. On  all family records that I have found he was Forker W. Gerdes. On his  naturalization papers filed in Menard (why Menard?) County the form has him  as Folkert W. Gerdes in three places. Forker is not a name found in   Ostfriesland but I believe Folkert is.

I thought he had a sketch in one of the county history books but I can not  find his name in any of the indexes for the three listed on the website. I  do see William R. Gerdes his son (my great grandfather) listed. Does anyone  have these books to look up and see if Forker W. Gerdes has a sketch?

Interested in hearing from anyone having information on Forker or Folkert  W. Gerdes.
