I am searching for information on two brothers, Peter and Henry Germann, who came from Germany ca 1848-50. Family lore says to New Orleans, and up the river to Beardstown. Jun 12, 1852 Peter Germann married Anna Margaret Muhr in Virginia IL. (his name was shown as Jarman.) They lived in Beardstown many years, and later moved to Sangamon CO where he died in 1917, she died in 1907.
His brother, Henry Germann, married Elizabeth Plattner, 8 Aug 1856 in Beardstown. Henry and Elizabeth had 4 children: Marey ca 1860, Rachel ca 1863, Margaret(Minnie) ca 186l8 and Edward ca 1866. We have lost all touch with this line. The last we heard of Henry was when he signed himself out of the IL Soldiers and Sailors home at Quincy in 1901 with a forwarding address of Stanton NE (a daughter's address it said).
Peter and Anna Margaret had:
1. Henry Jacob b. 5 Aug 1854, m/Eva Marie Stoeber (our line)
2. John b. 22 May 1856, m/Wilhelmina (Minnie) H. Wolf
3. Kate b. 2 Jun 1858, m/ Johannes Mort Nowak
4. Jacob Peter b. 28 Mar 1860, m/ Lu Forsythe
5. George Jacob b. 19 Apr 1863 m/ Julia Schlict
6. Emma b Sep 1867 m/"Pete" Williams
7. Edward F. b.1 Jan 1869/70 m/ Ollie Belle ____
8. and an unnamed male born 1853.
A third man, Jacob Germann, also lived in Beardstown in this timeframe. Peter sold him land in Beardstown in 1869. Was he a third brother? Jacob died ca 1881 in Beardstown.
Would like to contact anyone with information on this family. Are descendants of any of them still in Cass County? What drew them up the river to Beardstown? Was it chance or was there something going on in Cass county at that time which drew immigrants?
Thanks for any and all help. Judy Germann

I am researching the WILFORD & WHITE families. In the 1850 census a Mrs. WILFORD and her two young daughters were living with a William White and his family in Beardstown. Her husband, listed in death records as Mr. WILFORD had died that same year. A 3 year old child, John B. WILFORD, who died in Aug. 1849 is buried in the St. Alexius Cemetery in Beardstown. This may be the son of the Mrs. Wilford in the 1850 Census. I believe Mr. & Mrs. Wilford came from Naseby parish in Northamptonshire, England. I also think Mrs. Wilford was a sister of
William White. I would like information on what happened to the Wilford and White families after 1850.

I am inquiring about the Briar Family. It has several of its roots in Cass County. In particular I am searching for James Briar and Mary Davis who lived in Cass County shortly after 1800, they had several children who were born in Cass County and were also later married their. I have some of the information about the marriages and very little about the their birth dates and death dates or how many children they had. I have traced my Great Grandfather James D. Briar (wife Clara Woodard. He was the son of George Briar b.August 18, 1817(wife Sidney Capper m.9/5/1844). Georges father was James Briar who was married to Mary Davis. This is where my quest has ended. In my notes I have information that there is a book on the Briar family that was prepared sometime around 1980, but cannot find out who did the research consequently I do not know who to contact. They may have some the information that I am looking for. If you can be of any help it would be greatly appreciated, Thank You.

I am researching Jasper BUCK and Sophia CORBETT who came to Virginia, Cass County from NC in the early 1800s. ( Who were the Corbetts? Where were they from?) Also Mary OWENS, (died 1860 in Arenzville) wife of John WAGLE Jr. Also Phoebe TODD, born 1812 Madison Co. KY, died 1890 in Beardstown (Was she the daughter of Sally Todd and if so, who was Sally? Who was Sally's father?) I am most interested in the MENGE family, particularly William MENGE and Caroline BRECK Menge who were the parents of JOHN C. MENGE, b. 1881 Arenzville, d. 1909 Beardstown. Was it really a horse trampling? Where did John and Caroline come from? The women's heritages are so difficult to trace. I have a lot of information that I would love to share and many mysteries as well.

W. Kaffenberger Mon Jan 6 19:27:33 1997
My great-great grandfather, Heinrich Kaffenberger, and his wife Elizabeth, settled in Beardstown, Cass Co., IL. They emmigrated from Germany, Baden to be specific, between August of 1844 and August of 1845. I have not yet been able to find my gr gr grandf on any Ships Passenger Lists. I know there are books on German immigrants ships passengers that cover from about 1850 on. But I have never seen any that cover the years 1844 and 1845. Does anyone know of any published resources on German immigrants I could use to find out exactly when and on what ship my ancestors come over on? Also, a Helen Gerlaine Kaffenberger is listed in the family Bible maintained by my family in Beardstown and shows only her death date as 1914. Anyone know who she is or how I might find out? County death records didn't turn up anything.
