Homer V. Lael 1922 - 2003 Beardstown

    Homer V. Lael, 80, of Beardstown, died Saturday morning, May 17, 2003, at St. John's Hospital in Springfield.
    He was born Aug. 19, 1922, in Scott County, the son of John and Donna Liel Lael. He married Fern Pate on June 29, 1940 in Palmyra, Mo., and she survives in Beardstown.
    He is also survived by one daughter, Sharon, (husband, Bob Sr.) Rhoades of Rushville; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one sister, Rena Ehlert; and six brothers, Owen, Skiles, Carl, R.V., Ross and a twin brother at birth.
    Mr. Lael was formerly employed with Critic Mill in Beardstown and retired in 1982, after many years of service with Oscar Mayer in Beardstown. He was a faithful member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Beardstown, where he served as usher and greeter for many years. Mr. Lael appreciated roses and liked spending time doing yard work and growing roses. As a man who enjoyed people and always wore a smile, he truly loved his family and treasured the time he spent camping with them.
    Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Beardstown, with burial at Beardstown City Cemetery. Friends may call after 4 p.m. Monday at Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown, with family meeting friends from 6-7:30 p.m. Memorials may be given to First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Beardstown of Christian Love in Action in Beardstown.

Viola Lancaster - 1930-2003 - Beardstown

    Viola Lancaster, 72, of Beardstown, died Tuesday afternoon, March 18, 2003, at her residence.
    She was born April 7, 1930, in Beardstown, the daughter of Warren and Emma Thompson Lawson. She married Morris H. "Spanky" Lancaster
Sr. Feb. 23, 1950, in Mount Sterling, and he survives.
    She is also survived by four sons, Morris "Spanky" Jr. (companion, Gail), William (wife, Diane),Robert (wife, Sharon) Thorp-Lancaster, and Donald (wife, Amy), all of Beardstown; eight grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by two brothers, John Lawson in infancy and Donald "Sleepy" Lawson; and two grandchildren.
    Mrs. Lancaster attended school in Beardstown and First Southern Baptist Church in Beardstown. She enjoyed playing bingo.
    Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown, with burial at Beardstown City Cemetery. Friends may call after 4 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, with family meeting friends from 6-8 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer's Association or the American Heart Association. Morris L. 'Bud' Lane 1930-2006 - Chandlerville

   Morris L. "Bud" Lane, 75, of Chandlerville, died Wednesday morning, May 10, 2006, at his residence.
   He was born Sept. 6, 1930, in Beardstown, the son of Ralph H. and Myrtle Jane Cox Lane. He married Dorris J. Mibbs on March 10, 1954, in Havana, and she survives.    He is also survived by three sons, Rodney (wife, Carolyn), Randy (wife, Debbie) and Ronnie (wife, Cheryl), all of Chandlerville; one daughter, Candy (husband, Joseph) Having of Chandlerville; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one brother Robert (wife, Luvena) of Chandlerville. He was preceded in death by one son, Lyle Dean; three brothers; and one sister.
   Mr. Lane was  a member of the Chandlerville Baptist Church, Chandlerville Post 694 American Legion and the DAV. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in Korea. He worked for over 45 years at the C & IM Coal Docks in Havana, retiring in 1991.
   Funeral services will be  held 11 a.m. Saturday at Litner-Hurley Funeral Home in Chandlerville, with burial at Bethel Cemetery in rural Chandlerville. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Mary M. Langdon 1918-2002
    Mary M. Langdon, 84, of Beardstown, died early Saturday morning, Nov. 23, 2002, at Evergreen Place in Beardstown.
    She was born May 3, 1918, in Brown County. She married Clarence Langdon and he preceded her in death Jan. 28, 1959.
    She is survived by seven sons, Wayne Deeter of Springfield, Jim Deeter of Norfolk, Va., Jerry Deeter of Augusta, Clarence Langdon,  Raymond Langdon of Suffolk, Va., Kenny Langdon of Junction City, Kan., and George Langdon of Abilene, Kan.; three daughters Maxine
Deeter of Augusta, Shirley Langdon of Jacksonville and Leta Langdon of Beardstown; 15 grandchildren; and her special "sister" Mary Jones
of Mount Sterling. She was preceded in death by three sons; one daughter; and one sister.
    Mrs. Langdon was of the Baptist faith. She loved playing bingo, listening to country western bands and talking to her friends. She was a lover of animals all of her life and was especially close to her "granddog," Buggy.
    Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown, with burial at Mt. Sterling City Cemetery. Friends may call after 4 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with the family meeting friends from 5-7 p.m. Friends may also call at the home of William Moulton at 221 W. Beardstown Street in Virginia. Mayola Large - 1908-2003 - Beardstown

    Mayola Large, 94, of Beardstown, died Monday morning, March 24, 2003, at Heritage Manor South in Beardstown.
    She was born Sept. 7, 1908 in Upton, Ky., the daughter of John B. and Lucetti Leona Shipp Jaggers. She married Wilmer S. Large Oct. 24,
1925, in Cass County, and he preceded her in death Dec. 18, 1972.
    She is survived by one son, Don R. (wife, Sharon) of rural Beardstown; two daughters, Iva M. Stock of Beardstown and Mary Jane (husband, Jim) Canady of Henrico, N.C.; 24 grandchildren; and several great and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Eva P. Meyer, two sons, Lloyd R. and Glenn A. Large; one granddaughter; one brother, Roy Jaggers; and two sisters, Bea Tucker and Ruth Ackerman.
    Mrs. Large attended Swan Lake Grade School in rural Beardstown and was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Beardstown.
She farmed with her husband in Cass County. While her children were growing up, she was a homemaker and mother. She worked for nine years as a nurse's aide at Culbertson Memorial Hospital in Rushville and Schmidt Memorial Hospital in Beardstown. After her husband died, Mrs. Large enjoyed visiting and going places with her good friends Olga Treadway and Leda Dorsey. She loved to garden -- both flower and
vegetable -- and she grew the "prettiest gladiolas."
    Funeral serves will be held 11 a.m. Friday at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Beardstown, with burial at Black Oak Cemetery in rural Beardstown. Friends may call at the church one hour prior to services Friday. Family will meet friends from 5:30-7 p.m. Thursday at Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown. Memorials are suggested to the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Beardstown or Cass/Schuyler Area Hospice.

Ralph C. Lawson, Sr. -1916-2003 - Arenzville

   Ralph C. Lawson, 87, of Arenzville, died Friday morning, Aug. 29, 2003, at his residence.
   He was born Feb. 2, 1916, in Beardstown Township, the son of Samuel and Nellie M. Darrow Lawson. He married Barbara Mae Daniels on Nov. 15, 1941, in St. Louis, and she survives.
   He is also survived by one son, Ralph C. Jr. of Beardstown; one daughter, Ann (husband, Charles) Koch of Arenzville; three grandchildren, Becky (husband, Bob) Saylor of Beardstown, Scott Koch (companion, Tammy Lacy) of Jacksonville and Angie Koch (companion, Brock Rohn) of Beardstown; three great-grandchildren; and one sister, Ellen Gabbert of Warrenton, Mo. He was preceded in death by 12 brothers and sisters; and one granddaughter, Tina Lynn Lawson.
   Mr. Lawson attended rural Cass County schools. During World War II, he and his wife were employed at the Savanna Ammunitions Plant in Savanna. He was also formerly employed with CB & Q Railroad in Beardstown and with the Arenzville-Hagener Elevator. He was a faithful member of Union Baptist Church in Beardstown. He enjoyed camping with his family and was a member of Cloud 9 Ranch in Caulfield, Mo.
   Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown, with burial at Arenzville North Cemetery. Family will meet with friends from noon until the time of funeral services Sunday at the funeral home. Condolences may be sent to the family at sagerfh@casscomm.com.

KATHRYN ELIZABETH LEE    (death date: 20 March 1982)

Beardstown --Kathryn Elizabeth Lee, age 86 of Beardstown, died at Culbertson Memorial Hospital in Rushville, Saturday at  6:25 a.m.  She was born on March 7, 1896 at Poplar Bluff, Missouri, the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. White.

She was preceded in death by: her husband, Walter Lee, June 11, 1972; one daughter, Anna Lucille Gregory; her parents.

Mrs. Lee is survived by: a daughter, Nellie Renford of Decatur, Illinois, two granddaughters, Patsy Johnson of Cole Camp, Missouri and Sandy Newman of Iona, Missouri; 4 great grandchildren and two step-sisters of Gatewood, Missouri.

Friends may call at the Cline Funeral (Home) after 9:30 a.m. Tuesday and the funeral will be held at the graveside at Bloomfield Cemetery, south of Bluffs, (Scott Co.) Illinois, at 11 a.m. Tuesday, with Rev. Lottie Morrow conducting the services.

Mrs. Leinberger of Chandlerville dies: Rites There Sunday

    Mrs. Edith Ellen Leinberger of Chandlerville died Christmas Day at Meline  Nursing Center. She was 84 years of age.
    Mrs. Leinberger was born in Cass county June 6, 1891, daughter of Alfred  and Martha Gerdes Davis. She was married to Edward A. Leinberger March 19,   1921, and he died in August of 1926. Two sons survive: Edward L. and John  A. both of Chandlerville. There are six grandchildren and one great grandchild.
    Two sisters also survive: Mrs. Marie Kern of Chandlerville and Mrs. Nellie  Hand of Ashland.
    Mrs. Leinberger wa a member of the Chandlerville Salem Lutheran church   where services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday with the pastor, Rev. J. H.   Beiderwieden officiating. Interment will be in Chandlerville Cemetery.
    Friends may call at Lintner-Buchanan Funeral Home Saturday afternoon and evening.

Nancy Ann Lewis, daughter of William and Nancy Lucas, was born near Chandlerville, Ill., on January 10, 1853 and passed away at ten o'clock
last Friday at the home of her son Ira in Flint, Michigan, at the age of 79 years 1 month and 9 days.
     Most of her life was spent in Illinois. She was united in marriage to Kilbourne Lewis in 1873, he departing this life June 16, 1905.
     To this union was born nine children. Lizzie and one infant daughter passing away in childhood and one son Frank of Peoria was called by death April 3rd last year.
      While not a member of any church, her life was spent in doing for others and her influence will live among those who learned to love her.
     She leaves to mourn her passing six children, 4 sons, Jerry of Chandlerville; Alonzo of Peoria; Ira of Flint Mich., and Arthur of Havana;
2 daughters, Mrs. Rosa Gerdes, Chandlerville and Mrs. Marie Walsh of Chicago; also 17 grandchildren, 7 great grand children besides other
relatives and a host of friends.
     The remains were shipped to this city Monday morning and taken to the home of her daughter, Mrs. W.R. Gerdes. Funeral services were held at teh Mt. Olive Baptist church monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. W.A. Ogden of Oakford. Interment was made n the Mt. Olive cemetery with the Lintner funeral service in charge.
     Special music was furnished by Mrs. Alvin Gebhards, mrs. A.J. Nollsch, C.A. Theivagt and A.L. Lintner, with Mrs. Russell Lynn presiding at the piano.
     The pallbearers were: Ernest and Alva Gerdes, Clifford Gerdes, Wallace Smith, Virgil lewis and Cleve Emmons. Flowers were in charge of Pauline Gebhards, Wilma Milstead,  Pauline Murphy and Fae Lucas.
    A mother dear is from us gone,
    And one we loved is still
    A place is vacant in our hearts
    Which no one else can fill.
    Oh mother, how we miss you.
    Thou was't kind to one and all;
    We must grieve for you no longer,
    Thou has't answered to God's call
    Mother thou was't always with us
    In our trials, cares, and pains
    May we hear our trials as thou didst
    Till we meet with thee again
    May God's spirit hover o'er us

Note: The newspaper name and date is not noted. According to the death certificate issued by the Michigan Department of health, she died Feb. 19, 1932 of acute bronchitis. The newspaper would be from the next week and is  a Cass Co. publication. The burial is noted in the obituary as being in Mt. Olive Cemetery. My grandfather Cleve Emmons (married Leona Ethel Gerdes daughter of Rosa Lewis Gerdes) was a pallbearer at this funeral and this was his clipping in his bible. He crossed out Mt. Olive Cemetery and wrote in Pontiac Cemetery. When I visited Pontiac Cemetery this past spring, I found her monument once more and it was still in  Pontiac Cemetery.

Francis G. Little  1922-2006 Virginia

   Francis G. Little, 83, of Virginia, died Monday morning, June 19, 2006, at his residence.
   He was born Nov. 25, 1922, in Scott County, the son of Leonard and Nita Inez Gerald Little. He married Audrey Phyllis Bergthold, and she survives.
   He is also survived by two daughters, Roberta "Robin" (husband, Randy) Brown of Virginia and Karen Little (husband, Tim Roberts) of Fort Davis, Texas; three sons, David (wife, Cindy) of Newton, Pa., Steven (wife, Darlene) of Beardstown and Roger (fiancee, Cynthia Cantieri) of Waukegan; seven grandchildren, Ian and Rachel Little of Newton, Pa., Carly (husband, Dan) Sirian of Rockford, Kristi (husband, Joseph) Edwards of Virginia, Shane Little of Beardstown, Jeremy Brown of Oak Park and Jeffrey Brown of Virginia; three sisters, Virginia Schmidt of Moline, June Lewis of South Jacksonville and Jean (husband, John) Boehner of Fort Myer, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
   Mr. Little was a graduate of Bluffs High School and served with the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked in many varied jobs prior to his retirement. He was a member of the Virginia United Methodist Church and the American Legion Post 2910 of Bloomington. He enjoyed supporting his beloved Chicago Cubs and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
   Cremation rites have been accorded. Memorial services will be held 3 p.m. Friday at Virginia United Methodist Church in Virginia, with burial at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia. The family will meet friends at the church from 2 p.m. until time of services. Memorials are suggested to Virginia Bread of Love Program or Chandlerville-Ashland-Virginia EMTs. Donald Ross Logan - 1918-2003 - Beardstown

    Donald Ross Logan, 85, of Beardstown, died Monday morning, May 12, 2003, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.
    He was born May 1, 1918, in rural Cass County near Chapin, the son of Salonis Douglas and Gertrude Bratton Logan. He married Sadie Lee
Stratton Feb. 18, 1947, in Beardstown, and she survives.
    He is also survived by one son, Darrell (wife, Tonya) of Beardstown; six daughters, Patricia (husband, Charles) Hierman of Chapin, Donetta Lee Logan of Beardstown, Ruth Ann (husband, Paul) Sutterfield of Beardstown, Barb (husband, Mike) Dorwart of Beardstown, Judy (husband, Chuck) Fowler of Richardson, Texas, and Kathy (husband, Mike) Davis of Tower Hill; 22 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by four brothers, John, Joe, Charles and Fred; and one sister, Vina "Becky" Logan.
    Mr. Logan joined the Army at Ford Ord in California in 1940. He was engaged in battles and campaigns of Aleutians, Ryukyus, Southern
Philippines and Eastern Mandates. Staff Sergeant Logan departed enlistment in 1945 at Jefferson Barracks in Missouri with four Bronze Stars, a Purple Heart and a Good Conduct Medal. He retired from Burrus Seed Farms where he worked as a farm hand, truck driver and supervisor over the detasslers.
    Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Goodwin Funeral Home in Beardstown, with burial at the Veterans' section of Oak Grove Cemetery in Beardstown. Sadie Lee Logan - 1928-2003 - Beardstown

    Sadie Lee Logan, 74, of Beardstown, died Saturday morning, Sept. 20, 2003, at her residence.
    She was born Oct. 16, 1928, in Memphis, Tenn., the daughter of Ralph Lee and Fannie Spry Stratton. She married Donald Ross Logan on
Feb. 18, 1947, in Beardstown, and he preceded her in death May 12, 2003.
    She is survived by one son, Darrell (wife, Tonya) of Beardstown; six daughters, Patricia (husband, Charles) Hierman of Chapin, Donetta Lee, Ruth Ann (husband, Paul) Sutterfield, Barb (husband, Mike) Dorwart and Judy Fowler, all of Beardstown, and Kathy (husband, Mike) Davis of Tower Hill; 22 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Peggy Stratton, of Jacksonville and Helen (deceased husband, Ralph) Hull of Olney; one brother, Robert Butler of Chandlerville; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth Edmunds and Georgie Spires; and one brother, Ralph Stratton.
    Mrs. Logan was a housekeeper for Lutheran Social Services and worked at J. Capps & Sons in Jacksonville. She was dearly attached to her pet dog, Beethoven who was by her side at her death as were her children.  Memorial services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Goodwin Funeral
Home in Beardstown. Burial of the creamated remains will immediately follow at the funeral service at Oak Grove Cemetery of Beardstown. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. "Mrs. Clara Logsdon Dies Funeral services to be Saturday Mrs. Curtis Logsdon, 54 years old, a widely known and highly respected citizen, died suddenly at 4:30 o'clock this morning at her home 617 West Main street.
     The body was taken to the Cline Funeral Home to be prepared for burial, and will be returned to the late residence tomorrow morning. Funeral services will be held at the Methodist church, with the Rev. A.E. Beddoes in charge. Burial will be in the  family lot at the City cemetery.     
     Born in Cooperstown, Clara, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Travis Dozier, was born in Cooperstown January 21, 1887 and was 54 years, three months and 17 days of age at the time of her death. She was united in marriage August 7, 1905 to Curtis Logsdon and  has made her home in this city since that time.
     Surviving besides the husband are two sons, Elmer and Ray, and a daughter Mrs. Faye Ross, all of this city; her mother, Mrs. Anna Dozier of Cooperstown; a brother Frank Dozier of Cooperstown; and the following sisters; Mrs. Almira Glenn, Mrs. Laura Heeman, both of Beardstown; Mrs. Lottie Logsdon of Cooperstown; Mrs. Hattie Mohrman and Mrs. Iva Patterson of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Eleven grandchildren also survive.
     A son, Clyde, a brother, and her father preceded her in death. The decedent was a member of the Christian church of Cooperstown. A devoted wife and mother, Mrs. Logsdon was known by her many friends as a woman of noble character and kind disposition.
     Her sudden death came as a shock to her family, especially since only yesterday she had been in her ususal good spirits and able to do her regular duties about her home."

    "Tetanus (lockjaw) which resulted after he had stepped on a rusty nail a week ago Tuesday, proved fatal Monday night to Clyde Logsdon., 13 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Logsdon, 617 West Main street. p.m. in the Passavant hospital in Jacksonville.
     The lad died following several days of suffering from the ailment. He had stopped on the nail last Tuesday while working on a boat, the rusty point penetrating his light tennis shoes and making only a small hole in the bottom of his right foot. The youth was not taken to a doctor until
Thursday, it being thought he was not seriously hurt, when Dr. Charles was called to administer the Tetanus serum.
     When no relief was obtained the boy was sent to the hospital in Jacksonville, where the continued observance and treatment of several surgeons failed to save his life.
     Funeral services were held Thursday morning at 10:30 from the local Christian church with Rev. Schwab of Mt. Sterling in charge. Interment was made in the City Cemetery.
     The lad is survived by his parents, two brothers, Ray and Elmer and one sister, Faye, all of Beardstown. He was 12 years, 8 months
and 8 days of age at the time of his death."

    "Elmer Logsdon, lifelong Beardstown resident, died at Schmitt Memorial Hospital early Sunday morning.
      Mr. Logsdon was a river boat captain and pilot for most of his life. He was the owner of Elmer Logsdon River Construction Company, owning and operating the Clyde 1, the Elod and the Sprig.
     Born in Beardstown on April 9, 1908, the son of Curtis and Clara Dosier Logsdon. He married Blanche Smith on July 1? (illedgible), 1926 at
Virginia, Ill.
     Mr. Logsdon was a member of Owls Lodge No. ? (illedgible) and A.M.  Carpenters Union No. 904 Local of Jacksonville and operating Engineer Local No. ?, (illedgible)."

"John C. Logsdon, 48, died at his residence in Beardstown at 11:15 p.m. Saturday, February 17, 1990. He was born November 16, 1941, at Beardstown, the son of Ray and Elva Lee (Jones) Logsdon. He married Judy Meyer October 2, 1960 at Browning. She survives. He is also survived by two sons, Troy and Todd Logsdon; a grandson, Cole Curtis Logsdon; four brothers, Herschel, Francis, Tom and David; three sisters, Mrs. Byron (Mary) Hiles of Galesburg, Mrs. John (Pat) Davidsmeier and Reah Logsdon; his step-mother, Mrs. Ed (Bonnie) Hill; a half-brother, Michael Logsdon; an aunt, Mary E. Jones of Mt. Sterling; and numerous nieces and nephews.
     He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, John Curtis; and a sister, Betty Logsdon.
     Mr. Logsdon was part owner of the Logsdon Sand and Gravel Co. in Beardstown. He was a member of Cass Lodge #23 A.F. and A.M., the Consistery of Shrine, Elks Lodge #1007, Operating Engineers Local #965 and Carpenters Local #904.
     Services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, February 20, 1990, at the Cline Funeral Home in Beardstown. Rev. Time Southerland of Garland, Texas, was the officiant. Burial was in Beardstown City Cemetery.
    Memorials may be made to Elks Crippled Children Fund, Shrine Hospital or the American Cancer Society."

    "Louise Charlesworth Logsdon, 77, of R.R. 1 Arenzville, died at 3:45 p.m. Sunday, November 23, 1986, at Passavant Hospital.
    Mrs. Logsdon was born January 22, 1909 in Arenzville, the daughter of James R. and Effie Long Charlesworth. She married Curt Logsdon and he preceded her in death.
    Surviving are one brother, Wilbur Charlesworth of Arenz ville; one sister, Ethel Charlesworth of R.R. 1, Arenzville; and several nieces and
nephews. She was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
    Services will be held today (Wednesday) at 1:30 p.m. at the Williamson Funeral Home, Jacksonville, with burial in Beardstown East Cemetery.       Memorials are suggested to the Heart Fund."

Phyllis N. Logsdon 1933-2002
    Phyllis N. Logsdon, 69, of Beardstown, died Monday, Oct. 14, 2002, at her residence.
    She was born July 23, 1933, in Hadley Township, near Baylis, the daughter of K.L. "Lefty" and Nina Bernice Orebaugh Seaborn. She married Elmer Dale "Bub" Logsdon in 1955, and he preceded her in death June 14, 1986.
    She is survived by her mother of Beardstown, two sons, Dana Kim (wife, Tricia) and Matthew Dale (wife, Georgeann), both of Beardstown; one daughter, Krysta Lynn Logsdon of Beardstown; seven grandchildren; and three brothers, Phillip (wife, Elaine) Seaborn and Patrick E. (wife, Lily) Seaborn, both of Baylis, and Butch (wife, Patty) Seaborn of Beardstown.
    Mrs. Logsdon graduated from Beardstown High School in 1951 where she was very active in her class and participated as a cheerleader. She was employed with John M. Endres, Attorney-at-Law, in Beardstown for the past 17 years. She was an avid photographer and especially loved doing things for other people.
    Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at the Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown, with burial at Beardstown City Cemetery. Friends
may call after 3 p.m. today at the funeral home with the family meeting friends from 5-7 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association.

    Anna M. Long, 57, of Beardstown, died Monday evening, Jan. 20, 2003, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.
    She was born Feb. 18, 1945, in Kansas City, Mo., the daughter of Jessie H. and Armissie Virgie Mae Huffman Piper. She married Willard
Dyer in 1964 and he preceded her in death. She then married Gary Wilson March 25, 1970, and he preceded her in death. She married Sanford Long in 1983 and he preceded her in death.
    She is survived by one son, David (wife, Peggy) Dyer of Beardstown; one daughter, Serena Wilson of Beardstown; her mother Virgie Braind of Bedford, N.H.; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother Gale Piper of Missouri; two sisters Dollie Schackleford of Monument, Kan., and June Creesey of Plymouth, Ind.; and numerous half brothers and half sisters. She was preceded in death by her father.
    Mrs. Long attended school in Peoria. She was a home maker who enjoyed taking care of her family. She was a happy person who liked people, liked to make crafts, and enjoyed attending yard sales.
    Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Friday at the Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown, with burial at Beardstown City Cemetery. Friends may call after 4 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with family meeting friends from 5-7 p.m.

    Helen Kathy Surratt Long, 56, of Virginia, died Tuesday morning, Dec. 17, 2002, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.
    She was born Oct. 19, 1946, in Jacksonville, the daughter of Melvin S. "Jack" and Helen Virginia Alexander Surratt.
    She is survived by one son, Frank J. Long II of Virginia; her mother of Ashland; four brothers, Donald Surratt of Ashland, Dick (wife, Millie) Surratt of Rushville, Danny Ray (wife, Rose) Surratt of Lovington, N.M, and Melvin (wife, Mary) Surratt of Jerseyville; one sister, Darlene (husband, Dick) Marshall of Mission, Texas, and several nieces and nephews.
    She was preceded in death by her father, and two brothers, Emil Surratt and Jackie Surratt.
    Mrs. Long worked at the Human Resource Center in Virginia and also cleaned homes in Virginia. She was a member of Faith Baptist Church
in Virginia.
    Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Williamson Funeral Home in Jacksonville, with burial at Chapin Cemetery near Chapin. Friends may call after noon Thursday at the funeral home where the family will meet friends from 4-7 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.

Carol 'Sudie' Lovell - 1943-2003 - Beardstown

   Carol "Sudie" Lovell, 60, of Beardstown, died Friday afternoon, May 30, 2003, at her residence.
   She was born April 11, 1943, in Bloomington, the daughter of Lawrence and Mary Bruner Walker. She married James L. Lovell June 20, 1965, in Bloomington, and he survives.
   She is also survived by her father, Gene Shifflett of Bloomington; two sons, Mark (wife, Mary) of Beardstown and Matthew (wife, Diana) of Franklin; two daughters, Mary (husband, Bill) Upp and Emily, both of Beardstown; eight grandchildren, Kimberly Creech, Christina, Mark Jr., Courtney and Grace Lovell, Lewie Smith and Jacob and Noah Upp; one great-grandson; two brothers, Bud Otto of Miami and Mike (wife, Rena) Shifflett of Bloomington; and one sister, Terri (husband, Mike) Abfalder of Normal. She was preceded in death by her parents.
   Mrs. Lovell graduated from Bloomington High School in the class of 1961 and from Illinois State University in 1967 with a bachelor of science degree in special education. She taught in the Towanda, Bloomington, Havana, and Beardstown school districts. At the time of her death, Mrs. Lovell was employed as a teacher of special education at Gard School in Beardstown. While residing in Havana, she and her husband also owned and operated Video Circus in Havana from 1989 until 1991. She was a faithful member of First Christian Church in Beardstown. She enjoyed swimming and camping, especially at Evening Star Camp Ground near Havana. She truly loved her family and her grandchildren and treasured the time spent with them.
   Funeral services will be held 7 p.m. Monday at the First Christian Church in Beardstown, with graveside services held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Beardstown City Cemetery. The family will meet friends from 5-7 p.m. Monday at the church. Beardstown School District 15 personnel will hold a candlelight vigil from 6:30 to 7 p.m. at the church Monday. Memorials are suggested to Beardstown Christian Academy or Cass/Schuyler Area Hospice. Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown is in charge of arrangements.

Bessie A. Lynn 1924-2002
      Bessie A. Lynn, 78, of Virginia, died Saturday evening, Nov. 9, 2002, at St. John's Hospital in Springfield.
      She was born Feb. 20, 1924, in Essex, the daughter of Michael Riley and Sophie Hasselman Wright. She married James Norman Lynn Dec.
19, 1944, and he preceded her in death in July of 1970.
      She is survived by three daughters, Georgia Jones of Springfield, Nancy (husband, Russell) Taylor of Loda, and Jeanette (husband, Wendell) Harbin of Beardstown; two sons, Dana B. (wife, Connie) of Virginia and Sgt. Carl R. (wife, Gerlinde), stationed with the U.S. Army in Ansbach, Germany; one stepdaughter, Joann Martin of Kansas City, Mo.; one stepson, Deadrick (wife, Cindi) Lynn of Lansing, Mich.; 14 grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Carl Michael Wright, Howard Wright, James Riley Wright and Leroy Wright; and three half sisters, Elsie Monferdini, Stella Sarti, and Minnie Bolotta.
      Mrs. Lynn was employed at Kordite in Jacksonville and later operated the Grand Villa restaurant in Virginia. At various times through her career, she worked as a nurse's aide in nursing homes and private residences. She attended Shiloh Cumberland Presbyterian Church in rural Virginia. An avid gardener and mushroomer, she enjoyed bingo, playing cards, lottery tickets, and solving puzzles.
      Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Massie Buchanan Funeral Home in Virginia, with burial at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Virginia Bread of Love or Cass County Home Health Care.

Randy E. Lyons - 1960-2006 - Beardstown

   Randy E. Lyons, 46, of Beardstown, died Thursday morning, May 11, 2006, at his residence.
   He was born April 29, 1960, in Jacksonville, the son of William and Sandra Westrope Lyons. He married Teresa Whitlock on July 13, 1996, in New Salem, and she survives.
   He is also survived by his parents of Jacksonville; his maternal grandfather, Virgil Westrope of Jacksonville; five children, Susan (husband, Patrick) Spires, Jason Lyons, Elizabeth Lyons and Brent Lyons, all of Beardstown and Nikki Lyons of Clinton; five grandchildren, Gage, Garrett and Grayson Spires, Autumn Spurgeon and Eliza Schumaker; and three brothers, Mark (wife, Brenda) of Palmyra and Kerry and Kevin (wife, Lisa), both of Virginia. He was preceded in death by one son, Cory.
   Mr. Lyons attended school in Jacksonville and he was employed with Norfolk and Southern Railroad for 26 years. He enjoyed riding and working on his Harley-Davidson motorcycle, fishing, and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
   Graveside funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Monday at Gray Cemetery near New Salem. The family will meet with friends from 4-7 p.m. Sunday at Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown. Condolences may be sent to sagerfh@casscomm.com.
