Mrs. W. B. Kikendall

Mrs. Elizabeth Kikendall, wife of Wm. Kikendall, died at the family home in this city Monday.  She had been an invalid for eleven years, during which time she was tenderly cared for by her aged husband and children, she bore her sufferings uncompainingly and patiently awaited the end.  Six weeks ago, serious complications arose in her condition and both she and her friends realized that she could not recover.

Elizabeth M. Jobe, was born near Jeffersonville, Indiana, February 15, 1818.  Soon after her father, Daniel Jobe, moved to Shelbyville, Ky., where Elizabeth spend her childhood.  When she was fiftenn, her parents returned to Indiana taking up their residence in Morgan county.  Elizabeth attended shcool in Jefferson county, living with a married sister.  There she met W. B. Kikendall and they were married April 7, 1839.  In 1841 they moved to Kirksville, Ky., where both husband and wife professed religion and united with the M.E. church.  In 1849they went to live on the Kikendall homestead in Jefferson county, Ind., where they lived till 1855.  Then they emigrated to Iowa, where three years were spent.  In 1858 they came to this county settling near this city; later they became residents of Virginia where Mr. Kikendall has been a prosperous contractor and builder.

Mrs. Kikendall was the mother of eight children all of whom survive her: John S., of Bartley, Neb., William H., of Aurora, Neb., Mary E. Conover, of Champaign, Ill., George W., Charles, Asa O., and Eliza Jame Clifford, of this city.  She was the adopted mother of Martin Ackerman of Cambell, Neb.  Thirty-six grandchildren and four great grandchildren also survive her.  She never was known to complain.  She grew seriously ill about six weeks ago.  It is highly probably that this death the first in this large family, separate a husband and wife who have been married longer than any other couple in the county.

The funeral occured Christmas day, at 1 p.m., from the residence, services being conducted at the residence by Rev. A. H. Reat.  The interment followed at Walnut Ridge.  All the children were present except the son John.  The grandsons, Will Clifford, Ed Clifford and Walt Kikendall and grandsons-in-law, George Chambers, John Thompson and Jessie King, acted as pall bearers.

W.B.D. Kikendall

There died at the home of his daughter Mrs. Mary Conover, in Champaign, one of Cass county pioneers, who when, in active business, cut a considerable figure in the early history of this county.  This was W. B. D. Kikendall.  Since the death of his aged wife, Mr. Kikendall, has been much depressed in spirits, and his physical health has been gradually underminded.  He has spent most of his time since this sad event in visiting among his children and had but recently gone to Champaign.  Last week his daughter Mrs. Jas. Clifford and daughter-in-law Mrs. Asa Kikendall were summoned to his bedside, and were with him when he passed away.  The remains were brought to this city Thursday evening and taken to the residence ofhis son Asa.  The funeral will take place from the residence, Friday, at 2 p.m..  Interment at Walnut Ridge.

W. B. D. Kikendall was born in Madison, Jefferson county, Indiana, May 11, 1818.  He went to Kentucky in the early forties and resided near and became well acquainted with Cassius M. Clay.  He returned to Indiana, and afterwards located in Iowa.  From there he came to Illinois in 1858 and settled in this city and has since made his home here.  He was married April 7, 1839, to Elizabeth M. Job, who was his companion and helpmate for more than half a century.  She died December 23, 1895.  As a result of this union eight children were born all of whom survive.  They are George, Charley, Asa, and Mrs. Jas. Clifford of this city;  John, of Red Oak, Iowa; William, of Sioux City, Iowa, Mrs. Mary Conover, of Champaign and Mrs. Jennie Bryant, of Petersburg.

Deceased was a particularly well informed man, and was quite observant.  He talked most interestinly of the long past and his recollections would make a most entertaining volume.  He was actively engaged in building and contracting in this section for 20 years, and in the fifties hued out the sills and joist, from the Springer timber, and constructed the residence where Doctor Snyder now resides.  He has contributed his full share to the upbuilding of our city.

He was a most devoted husband, a kind father, a good citizen, and as before said, during his active business career, was an important factor in making the history of this city and county.

"A MOTHER DEAD"

Mrs. Eleanora King, For Many Years a Resident of Cass County died at the Home of her son.

   The many friends and acquaintance of Mrs. Eleanora King, who was for many years a resident of Cass county, and of Beardstown, died at the home of her son, in Frederick, Ill., Tuesday morning October the first.
   The body will be brought to Beardstown and the funeral services will be held at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Casper Hinschide 1829 Monroe street, Thursday at 1:30 p.m., conducted by Rev. P.C. Croll, pastor of the Fourth street Lutheran church. Interment will be in the city cemetery.
   The deceased was the mother of nine children and is survived by the following: Mrs. Bertha Reichert of Bluff Springs; August Koch of the city and Ed King of Frederick."

Orville Kline, 84, Of Ashland Dies Monday

    Ashland - Orville L. Kline, former Ashland resident, died Monday at the Soldiers and Sailors Home at Quincy where he had resided for the past several years. Mr. Kline, a veteran of World War One, was 84 years of age.
    He was born at Ashland Jan. 31, 1891, son of Joseph and Lydia Dannenberger Kline. He married Florence Elay at Hannibal, Mo. Dec. 7, 1915 and she died Dec. 7, 1961. They had no children. These sisters and brothers survive, Mrs. Stella Brasel of Mendon; Mrs. Katherine Brennecke of Hemet, California; and David Kline of Barry. One brother and two sisters preceded in death.
    Graveside rites will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Ashland Cemetery with Akerlund Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Kloker Dies on 81st Birthday At Nursing Home

    Mrs. Florence Kloker, 81, died at the Parkview Nursing Home at 5:15 a.m. Tuesday on her 81st birthday. She had been a patient at the nursing home for three months.
    Mrs. Kloker was born near Arenzville October 4, 1879, the daughter of William J. and Theresa Cire Green. She married  Fred Kloker March 21, 1909. Mr. Kloker preceded her in death in 1946.
    She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Roland Beard and Mrs. Charles Grant, both of Arenzville; one son, Fred of Kansas, Ill.; one brother, Edgar Green and one sister, Miss Anna Green, both of Beardstown; 12 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
    She was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers, and three sisters.
    Funeral services will be held at the M. E. church at Arenzville at 3 p.m. Thursday with the Rev. Stanley Rapp of Concord, pastor of the church officiating. The body will be taken to the church one hour before the service. The casket will be closed for the services.
    Interment will be in the East cemetery at Arenzville.
    Friends may call at the Cline Funeral home in Beardstown from 7:30 to 9 this evening.

Killed In Action

    Pfc. Lewis H. Kloker of the U. S. Army has been reported killed in action in Germany, according to a war department message received by his mother, Mrs. Leonard Bridgeman of Bath.
    Pfc. Kloker, who was 35, was reported killed on March 28. He was stationed with an infantry regiment and had been overseas for the last three years, serving in Iceland, England, Ireland, France and Germany. He was born in Arenzville and had two sisters residing in this city, Mrs. Frank Kuhlman, 1212 Jefferson Street, and Mrs. Helen Dodds, 408 East Third Street.
    He is also survived by his mother, Mrs. Bridgeman; step-father, Leonhard Bridgeman of Bath; sisters, Mrs. W. R. Hierman of Virginia, Mrs. Byron Lindsay of Peoria.

Eloise Knight, 86, dies Thursday

Eloise B. Knight, 86, a former Arenzville resident, died Wednesday night at the Jacksonville Convalescent Center.
She was born in Arenzville June 19, 1892, a daughter of John and Molly Bode Batis.
She married Fred Knight May 15, 1923. He died June 9, 1966.
She is survived by a son, Fred C. Knight of Arenzville; a daughter, Virginia Crow of Houston, Tex.; eight grand-children; eight great-grandchildren.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She was a member of the American Legion Auxillary and the Woman's Club of Arenzville. She was a former member of the Arenzville Presbyterian Church.
Services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Arenzville Methodist Church with the Rev. John Kovalcik officiating. The body will be taken to the church Saturday at 1 p.m.
Friends may call after 1 p.m. today at the Williamson Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 7 - 9 p.m. Burial will be in East Arenzville Cemetery.
Memorial gifts may be made to the American Cancer Association.

Clarice 'Cindy' Koehne - 1939-2003 - Ashland

   Clarice "Cindy" Koehne, 63 years, of Springfield, and formerly of rural Ashland, IL died Saturday afternoon, March 8, 2003 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.
   She was born October 7, 1939 in Gladbrook, Iowa, the daughter of Dr. Paul F. and Margaret Klever Marling. She married Glenn L. Koehne Sr. March 28, 1959, in Chandlerville, and he survives.
    She is also survived by three sons, Glenn Jr. of Ashland, Paul Allen of Springfield, and Frank of Ashland; one daughter, Lisa Remine of Las Vegas; seven grandchildren; one sister, Laura Inga of Staten Island, NY; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and one daughter, Terri Lee Koehne in infancy.
   Mrs. Koehne was a homemaker and loved to travel. She was of the Presbyterian faith.
   Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at the Lintner-Buchanan Funeral Home in Chandlerville, with burial at Chandlerville Cemetery. Friends may call after 4 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home where the family will meet friends from 5-7 p.m. Memorial gifts are suggested to the American Diabetes Association.

Lois C. Krohe 1938-2002

    Lois C. Krohe, 64, of Beardstown died Monday morning, December 2, 2002, at Heritage Manor East in Beardstown.
    She was born July 11, 1938, in Peoria, the daughter of Robert and Eva Haanpaa Gouran. She married Bud Krohe Dec. 23, 1981, in Tuscaloosa, Ala., and he survives in Beardstown.
    She is also survived by one son, Mark (wife, Marie) Connor of Beardstown; one daughter, Jeanette Krohe (companion, Homer Lopez) of Beardstown; five grandchildren; three sisters, Donna Bechard of Beardstown, Janice Seelye of Peoria, and Mary (husband, Dennis) Draksler of East Peoria; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Robert and Bill Gouran.
    Mrs. Krohe graduated from the Academy of Our Lady in Peoria in the class of 1956 and from Liberty Beauty College in Peoria. She had been
self-employed as a beautician for many years and recently served as a caregiver in Beardstown and Arenzville.
    Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Black Oak Church south of Beardstown, with burial at St. Alexius Catholic Cemetery in Beardstown. The family will meet friends from noon until time of services Wednesday at the church. Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown is in charge of arrangements.

Delbert Kruse - 1941-2004 - Virginia

      Delbert Kruse, 62, of Virginia, died Wednesday morning, Feb. 25, 2004, at Heritage Manor South in Beardstown.
      He was born Dec. 4, 1941, in Virginia, the son of Franklin and L. Maxine Young Kruse. He married Janice Anderson on Dec. 24, 1961, in Virginia, and she survives.
      He is also survived by his mother of Virginia; one son, Robert (wife, Tina) of Taylorville; one grandson, Sione Neely of
Taylorville; one sister, Linda (husband, Hack) Dulin of Virginia; and three nephews. He was preceded in death by his father; and one niece.
      Mr. Kruse was a 1960 graduate of Virginia High School. He was a truck driver for Cass County Service Co. and later owned and operated his own firm, Kruse Trucking. Most recently, he served as a truck driver for State Materials Service, a division of Illinois Road Contractors in Jacksonville from where he retired. In his spare time, he enjoyed woodworking and crafts.
      Cremation rites will be accorded. Services will be held at a later date. Memorial gifts are suggested to the Cass-Schuyler Area Hospice, 331 S. Main St., Virginia, IL  62691. Massie-Buchanan Funeral Home of Virginia is in charge of arrangements.

George "Otto" Kruse - 1903-2003 - Beardstown

   George "Otto" Kruse, 99, of Beardstown, died Saturday afternoon, March 15, 2003, at Heritage Manor East Nursing Home of Beardstown.
   He was born July 9, 1903, in Troy, Iowa, the son of Charles A. and Christina Breck Kruse. He married Anna Reinola Moran on Nov. 24, 1926, at the VonFossen House in Beardstown, and she preceded him in death Jan. 4, 1997.
   He is survived by one daughter, Virginia Lee Denny of Botavia; one granddaughter; one grandson; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by seven of his nine brothers and sisters.
   Mr. Kruse enjoyed growing flowers and was a member of the OWL Club which would play cards as a pastime. He was a retired dealership owner of Modern Chevrolet Sales, which is now Knipmeyer Chevrolet Inc. He started in the car sales business in Iowa. The first car he sold cost $414. Mr. Kruse came to Beardstown in 1922 and sold cars for a short while, delivered milk for two years and then went back to selling cars. Those years as a milk man were important because he met his future wife while delivering milk to her parent's home.
   Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Goodwin Funeral Home of Beardstown with burial at Beardstown City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until time of services Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to First Evangelical Lutheran Church. Helen E. Kruse 1917-2003 Virginia

    Helen E. Kruse, 85, of Virginia, died Monday morning, May 19, 2003, at Heritage Manor South in Beardstown.
    She was born Nov. 20, 1917 in Cass County, the daughter of Walter and Grace Irvin Riley. She married Harold R. Hassman Jan. 27, 1938,
in Cass County, and he preceded her in death Nov. 4, 1978. She later married Carlos J. Kruse Oct. 14, 1984, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa, and he survives.
    She is also survived by two daughters, Ellen M. (husband, Gary) Reische of Colchester and Mildred E. Edwards of Brandywine, Md.; three grandchildren, Neil Reische of Bushnell, Cheryl Taschler of Silver Spring, Md., and Beth Edwards of Brandywine, Md.; three-great-grandchildren; two stepdaughters, Carol Jean (husband, John) Orwig of Beardstown and Mary Jane (husband, Richard) Stock of
Virginia; six step-grandchildren; 10 great-step-grandchildren; one brother, Paul (wife, Betty) Riley of Virginia; two sisters, Margaret (husband, George) Fanning of Virginia, Freda Dalton of San Diego; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Harold Riley (surviving wife, Pat of Virginia) and William Riley.
    Mrs. Kruse was a 1936 graduate of Virginia High School and was employed as a cook for Brick Elementary School in rural Beardstown for 18 years prior to her retirement. She was a member of Shiloh Cumberland Presbyterian Church of rural Virginia and Cass County Home Extension.
    Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday at the Massie-Buchanan Funeral Home in Virginia, with burial at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia. Friends may call at the funeral home from 1 p.m. Friday until the time of services. Memorial gifts are suggested to Shiloh Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

On the same day (Tuesday, July 17) in the evening an accident occurred about 3 1/2 miles west of town on Indian Creek, that cast a gloom of
sorrow over the whole neighborhood. While hauling in grain at Mr. Crussies after loaded up, Mr. High Crussie thought to climb up on the
loaded wagon, he caught hold of a stake in the front part of the wagon which gave way and broke, and he fell on one of the horses which caused the animal to take fright and run throwing Mr. Crussie under the wagon, one wheel passed over his breast and one over his bowels, he lived about 15 minutes after the accident. The funeral was on Thursday conducted at the German M. E. Church west of Arenzville 2 miles. Mr. Crusie was well known and a much respected citizen.

Note: Even though the newspaper spelled his name Crussie, his tombstone and his letter of intent for naturalization has his name as Hie A.
Kruse. His wife Wibkie spelled it KRUSS. They were from Hanover and had the following children: Adolph (married Lena Vortman), Anna (married August Hansmeier), Henry (married Elizabeth Bojoun), Cathrine "Katie" (m. John Lea Dyer), Fredricka "Rickie" (m. Clem Dahman), and Phillip.

Hie and Wibkie were my great great grandparents, John Lea Dyer and Katie Kruse Dyer were my great grandparents.
