CASS WOMAN, AGED  85,  DIES         March 1947

   Mrs. Elizabeth Strube Davidsmeyer, 85, widely know throughout Cass County, died at 6 o’clock this morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Emil Ruppel, 1314 State Street.
   She was born in Germany, November 3, 1861 and came to America in 1879. In 1882 at Arenzville she married Frederick Davidsmeier, and their first home was on a farm near that village. Later they moved to a farm near Meredosia and still later they farmed near Bluff Springs.
   Her husband and two children, Walter and Mrs. Harry Sweatman, preceded her in death. Surviving are three sons, Ed. Davidsmeier of Virginia, Louis Davidsmeier of Chandlerville and William Davidsmeier of Springfield; and five daughters, Mrs. Hannah Brockschmidt of this city, Mrs. Herman Carls of near this city and Mrs. Otto Sweatman of Virginia, Mrs. Emil Ruppel of this city and Mrs. John Dour of Virginia. Also surviving are 36 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren.
   The body was taken to the Simpson Funeral home to be prepared for burial and will be removed to the Ruppel residence tomorrow afternoon. Funeral services will be held at the Lutheran church in Bluff Springs at 2 o’clock Sunday afternoon with the Rev. G. A. Saathoff officiating. Burial will be in the family lot in the City cemetery.

Young Wife and Mother is Summoned By Death       March 1918

   Mrs. Ed Davidsmeier who has been seriously ill for the past four weeks, suffering from Typhoid fever and Inflammatory rueumatism, passed away at  about twelve o’oclock at noon today at her home near Bluff Springs, aged only about twenty-eight years. She leaves to mourn her death besides the husband, five children, namely; Velma, the eldest, aged about nine years; Berdella, Norman, Marcella and Frieda.
   Before her marriage Mrs. Davidsmeier was Miss Frieda Koehne, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Koehne, who reside on West Sixth Street. Three sisters, Mrs Snyder near Rushville, Misses Lydia and Minnie Koehne and one brother Louis Koehne all of this city survive her.

JOHN HENRY DAVIDSMEYER, SR.       1923

   John Henry Davidsmeyer was born in Wehrendorf, Hanover, Germany on February 16, 1840 with his wife, Johanna nee Landewhrmeyer and five childeren came to America in 1887, at age of 47 years.Landing at Baltimore he brought his family directly to this state, worked for a time in Beardstown and then purchased a farm near Bluff Springs, which occupation he followed until 1909. After retiring from active work he made his home in Beardstown with his daughter, Mrs. John Wessel on W. Seventh Street.
   The deceased was baptized and confirmed in thr Luthern church and had been a faithful member of the local St. John's church ever since coming to this state. He was of quiet retiring dispoition, bearing the trials and enjoying the blessing of life in his calm, even way. he was satisfied with the position marked for him in life and with the old age of later years was content to spend his days with the children he loved. About two weeks ago he went to visit his son, Ernest Davidsmeyer, near Franklin, ILL., where death came to him Thursday night at nine o'clock. He reached the age of 83 years, 6 months and 20 days. His marriage was blessed with 13 childern, 3 dying in infancy in Germany and three in this contry, Henry, Fred, and a daughter Anna (Schroeder).
   The children surviving the father are Mrs. Fred Ivemeyer (Nora) of Fitzgerald, Ga. Herman Davidsmeyer of Kansas City, Mo.; John H. Davidsmeyer of Beardstown; Christ of Sturges, Mich.; Ernest of Franklin, ILL.; Mrs John Wessel of this city and Mrs. J. W. Kphler
of South Weymouth, Mass.; besides 32 grandchildren and 33 grear-grandchildren.
  The funeral services at the home 311 W. 7th St., will take place at 1:30 o'clock, Sunday afternoon. Services at St. John's Lutheran church will be in German and English. Interment will be made at St. John's Lutheran cemetery. The pallbearers are the grandsons- - Paul, Rudolph, Edward, Wm., Louis and Arthur Davidsmeyer.

Thirteen Year Old Lad Killed By Runaway Team

A runaway accident yesterday evening resulted in the death at 8:30 o'clock this morning of Walter Davidsmeyer, thirteen years old son of Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Davidsmeyer of near Bluff Springs. The accident in which the young man sustained the fatal injuries occurred at about 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon when he was helping his father stack wheat. The team of horses which he was driving to an empty wagon became frightened and ran away throwing the lad from the wagon and seriously injuring him. No one witnessed the accident but when the team returned to the workmen they set out and searched for the boy. He was found a short distance away in an unconscious state, with one arm broken, a bad scalp wound and internal injuries.

Dr. A. R. Lyles was called from Virginia and assisted by Dr. Mc Gee of that city administered to the injured lad, but all efforts were unavailing and death occurred at 8 o'clock this morning at the home of his parents, one and one-half miles northeast of Bluff Springs. The youth was aged 13 years 10 months and 7 days.

He regained consciousness for only about one minute, and that was at six o'clock last evening.

Funereal services will be held 1 o'clock Thursday afternoon from the family residence and from the St. Johns Lutheran Church of Bluff Springs at 2 o'clock conducted by Rev. Gasten.

The deceased is survived by his parents, one grandparent, Mr. Davidsmeyer, six sisters, Mrs. Hannah Brockschmidt and Mrs. Herman Carles of this city, Mr. and Mrs. Otto Sweatman of Virginia , Mrs Emil Ruppel, Beardstown , Miss Hilda Davidsmeyer at home, three brothers, Edward of Virginia and Louis and William at home, sixteen nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends who sincerely mourn his untimely death. The deceased attended the Warrior school and was a member of the St. Johns Lutheran Church of Bluff Springs.

Local Farmer Dies From Accident Injuries

 “Claude G. Davis, 80, a Cass county farmer who resided near Bluff Springs, died at 8:29 p.m. Wednesday in the intensive care unit of Memorial Hospital in Springfield of multiple injuries he received in a 4:40 p.m. accident near his home on Route 125. Davis was first taken to Schmitt Memorial Hospital and then transferred to the Springfield hospital. According to reports, Davis was traveling west on Illinois 125, attempting to turn left into a private driveway when he was struck broadside by a semi-truck driven by Raymond Hunsaker, 21, of Camp Point. Born on October 11, 1893 in Cass County, he was a son of James Philo and Nancy Jane Dyche Davis. He married Anna Marie Goff on February 12, 1914 at St. Alexius Catholic Church in Beardstown. Mr. Davis was a member of St. Alexius Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Beardstown Council 661 and the Bluff Springs Farmers Elevator board and was serving as vice president of the Cass County Mutual Fire Insurance Company. He was preceded in death by his parents; one great-grandson; five brothers and three sisters. He is survived by his wife, Anna; one son, Francis Davis of Los Angeles, California; two daughters, Mrs. Mary Anne Green of Peoria and Mrs. Dorothy Harris of Route 1, Beardstown; 18 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren, three sisters, Mrs. Bessie Hiles of Peoria, Mrs. Pearl La Follette in West Virginia, Mrs. Minerva Fanning of Virginia; numerous nieces and nephews.”

C.E. Davis, 81 Dies in West

Funeral Will Be Held Here Tuesday

Funeral Services will be held in this city at the Cline Funeral hone at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon for C. E. Davis. 81 years old, and a former resident here. He died Tuesday in Glendora. Calif. and the body will arrive here Monday.

The Funeral will be in charge of the Rev. E. W. Lathrope of Bluff Springs and burial will be in the Clark Cemetery. Mr. Davis was born in Monroe Precinct, Cass county September 18,1861 and was untied in Marriage to Rachel Ann Schaeffer, November 19. 1882, they lived in Cass County until 1923 and since then in California.

Mr. Davis was a retired farmer, having operated a farm near here on the Chandlerville Highway. Surviving besides the wife area a daughter. Mrs. Lula. Metcalf of Pamona Cal. two daughters in this city. Mrs Ethel Leonard and Mrs. Everett Doerr and two sons of this city. Elmer and Arthur. Also surviving are seven great grandchildren. A son preceded him in death.

Mrs. Leinberger of Chandlerville dies: Rites There Sunday

    Mrs. Edith Ellen Leinberger of Chandlerville died Christmas Day at Meline  Nursing Center. She was 84 years of age.
    Mrs. Leinberger was born in Cass county June 6, 1891, daughter of Alfred  and Martha Gerdes Davis. She was married to Edward A. Leinberger March 19,   1921, and he died in August of 1926. Two sons survive: Edward L. and John  A. both of Chandlerville. There are six grandchildren and one great grandchild.
    Two sisters also survive: Mrs. Marie Kern of Chandlerville and Mrs. Nellie  Hand of Ashland.
    Mrs. Leinberger wa a member of the Chandlerville Salem Lutheran church   where services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday with the pastor, Rev. J. H.   Beiderwieden officiating. Interment will be in Chandlerville Cemetery.
    Friends may call at Lintner-Buchanan Funeral Home Saturday afternoon and evening.

Obituary of Mrs. Elizabeth Foster Davis, 1800-1897.

Mrs. Elizabeth Foster Davis, one of the oldest and most highly respected citizens of Cass County passed away at 4 o’clock P.M., March 15^th, 1897, at the residence of her son, George W. Davis, after an illness of 3 or 4 weeks, from diseases incedent to old age. She was first confined to her bed from what was supposed to be an accidental fall, and from then on it seemed the thread of life had worn away until it parted without a struggle. Grandma Davis, as she was so familiarly called in this community, was born in East Tennessee near a place called Crab Orchard on June 5^th, 1800. In 1819 she was married to James Davis, who was born in Kentucky in 1796. They emigrated to Illinois in 1821, settling on a farm about 3 miles south of Ashland, where they remained for about 3 years. Then they moved to the Monroe precinct about 5 miles S.W. of Virginia. This was known as the Old Davis Homestead, later owned and occupied by one of the sons, George Davis, who lived there until his death. Grandpa died in 1856, then Grandma lived with her son George until her death. At the time of the Davis settlement in Cass County, their nearest neighbor was 4 miles and nearest grocery store was in St. Louis. All around them was a wild, untamed wilderness. The war whoops of the Indians still rang out and echoed along our bores, but with that intrepid zeal which marks the character of our early settlers in Illinois, Mr. Davis erected a home and reared a family of 14 children, 6 of them living at the time of this writing: Julia Ann, wife of Ned Davis; Mary Jane, wife of J.H. Tureman; Srah, wife of John Miller of Lincoln Nebraska; George W. and Frank M., both of Cass County; and Charles H. Davis of Green River Wyoming. They, with 38 grandchildren, 83 great-grandchildren, 6 great-great grandchildren, and other relatives, and many friends are left to mourn the loss of this faithful mother, friend and neighbor. She has been an earnest Christian since 1831, having joined the primitive Baptist Church and was baptized by Elder Plasters at that time. Her funeral occurred at the old homestead, March 17^th at 1 o’clock P.M. Elder John Scott officiated, taking for his text the 28^th and 29^th verses of the tenth chapter of John, ‘And I give unto them out of my Father’s hand.’ He preached a fitting sermon to the memory of this Mother in Israel, who all along the pathway of her long life has bountifully strewn flowers of Faith, Hope and Love. The interument was at the Davis graveyard on the old homestead, followed by a large concourse of relatives, neighbors, and friends. The casket containing the body was carried to its last resting place and her grave was strewn with beautiful flowers, thus one more of that grand community of settlers of Cass County, who assisted greatly in making the bright pages of history, is gone.”

 “F.M. Davis Called By Death. Died at Home in this City at early Hour Tuesday After Long Illness.

 Frank M. Davis, a veteran of the Civil war and commander of Downing Post G.A.R., died early Tuesday morning at his home in this city. He had been ill for some time. Mr. Davis was born in Monroe precinct, this county, October 21, 1839, and at the time of his death was over 78 years of age. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Davis. He was one of a family of fourteen children, all of whom with the exception of one sister, Mrs. Eliza E. Miller, of Santa Barbara, California, have preceded him in death. In 1863 Mr. Davis married Miss Eliza Cokenour, who died several years ago. Besides his sister, Mr. Davis is survived by the following children: Jule, of Beardstown; John G. of this city; Miss Hattie Davis and Mrs. Walter O. Kikendall, of this city; and Mrs. Frank Weaver, of Peoria. Mr. Davis was city marshall of Virginia for many years and also served several years as jailor of the Cass County jail. He had made his home in this city for many years. Mr. Davis enlisted to fight for the Union in the Civil War in Battery B, 2^nd Illinois Light Artillery. He was wounded at Corinth, Miss., after ten months’ service and was honorably discharged. Funeral services will be held from the family residence, Friday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock, conducted by Rev. Max B. Wiles, pastor of the Presbyterian church. Interment will be made in Walnut Ridge cemetery.”

 George Washington Davis was born a few miles southwest of this city May 11, 1834 and died on the same farm Tuesday afternoon. Funeral services took place yesterday afternoon from the residence, John Scott, a relative of the deceased and a minister of the Baptist faith, of Springfield, officiating, and interment was made in Walnut Ridge. The deceased was married to Frances Tureman and to them were born four children, Mrs. Alma Muhlert of Bowling Green, Missouri and Mrs. Minnie Wildt and Horace A. and Willis T. of this county. He is also survived by his widow, two sisters, Mrs. Sarah Miller of Larime, Wyoming, and Mrs. M.J. Tureman southwest of town, and by one brother, F.M. Davis, keeper of the Cass county jail, and by five grandchildren. The deceased had spent all his life on the farm on which he died with the exception of two years spent in Kansas and Sangamon Valley. He was one of the most successful farmers of this county and was a member of one of its best families. He was a member of the Masonic lodge, which conducted the funeral. His death was caused by an accident which befell him Monday. He was arranging some bean poles on his farm when he became dizzy and falling on one of them he sustained injuries which resulted in death a day later.”

Helen Margarette Davis - 1912-2004 - Beardstown
    Helen Margarette Davis, 91, of Mount Sterling and formerly of   Beardstown, died Sunday March 28, 2004, at Heritage Manor Nursing
Home in Mount Sterling. She was born May 29, 1912, in Cass County, the daughter of Charles Greenberry and Cornelia Madora Koester Tucker. She married Roy Davis on April 2, 1936, and he preceded her in death.
    She is survived by one daughter, Gladys Pearl (deceased husband, Ted) Eichelberger of Mount Sterling; one stepson, Marlin Davisof Homestead, Fla.; one stepdaughter, Alberta Wilkins of Springfield; three grandchildren, John Eichelberger of Versailles, Jennifer Eichelberger of Morro Bay, Calif.; and Chris Eichelberger of Mount Sterling; six stepgrandchildren, Susan Wilkins, Sherry Wilkins, Eric Wilkins, Kevin Davis, Nancy Davis and Linda Davis; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, John Franklin (deceased wives, Beatrice and Margaret) Tucker of Rushville and Raymond (wife, Violet) Tucker of Roodhouse; two sisters, Hazel (husband, Theodore) Rathman of Cherokee Village, Ark., and Mary (husband, Orville) Hendricker of Clifton Hill, Mo. She was preceded in death by one infant child; one son, Franklin Ernest Davis; one brother, Howard John (deceased wife, Ethel) Tucker; two stepsons Alfred Davis and Charles Davis; and one stepgrandchild, Barbara McCulley.
    Mrs. Davis was a 1930 graduate of Beardstown High School. She attended the Black Oak Church of rural Beardstown and First Southern Baptist Church of Beardstown. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, crocheting and cooking, and she loved being around her family.
    Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Southern Baptist Church in Beardstown, with burial in Beardstown City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today at Goodwin Funeral in Beardstown. Memorials are suggested to First Southern Baptist Church Youth Activity Fund. “James Allen Davis, one of Cass county’s oldest and most highly respected citizens, died at his homestead in Monroe precinct Friday night after prolonged and painful illness. His funeral occurred Sunday morning from the residence and was conducted by the Odd Fellows of which order he was an old and honored member. The religious services were conducted by Rev. John Scott, Upper Alton, who is the pastor of the Baptist church in this city. There was a large concourse of friends and relatives present to pay this last tribute of respect to the deceased. James Allen Davis was born October 2, 1824 in this county near Ashland and was perhaps the oldest native of the county living. His parents came here from Kentucky in 1822. He was married to Martha A., daughter of Philip Schaeffer, in March, 1840. As a result of this union six children were born, Minerva, wife of Richard Way; valentine, residing in Butler county, Nebraska; Sarah Ellen, wife of A.C. Robinson; Jas. Philo; Cyrus Edward; Chas. L residing in Douglas County, and William D. who died in July, 1881. His first wife died at a ripe age some years ago. In 1887 he married Mrs. Elizabeth Smith, who survives him. Deceased was a man of strong convictions and sterling integrity. He was a member of the Baptist church and was a promoter of every scheme that had for its object the advancement of morals and education. The history of Cass County, its material, moral, and educational advancement, can never be written without giving the fullest credit to James Allen Davis, whose memory will long remain with the living. The following resolutions were passed by Saxon lodge: Resolved, That in the death of our brother James Allen Davis, we have lost from our lodge room the presence of a faithful attendant, the counsel of a safe advisor, and a warm-hearted friend. Resolved, That in the character of our deceased brother we recognize those elements of Friendship, Love and Truth, which are the material results of …”

 This obituary mentions that the first wife, Martha A. died “at a ripe age some years ago.”  The Register of Deaths for Cass County shows that Martha died at the age of 53 years, 10 months and 3 days on July 21, 1884 at 5 P.M. from “Hepatic Cancer”. Incidentally, the youngest son of James and Martha, who is mentioned in James’ obituary, also was born and died in July, 1884, which makes me think she lost the child and then died or died in childbirth.

James C. Davis - 1922-2003 - Arenzville, IL.

    James C. Davis, 80, of South Jacksonville and formerly of Arenzville, died Sunday morning, March 23, 2003, at Modern Care Convalescent Center in Jacksonville.
    He was born July 6, 1922, in Camden, the son of Rollie Gilbert and Nona Catherine Yates Davis. He married Emma Filey May 26, 1946 in
Beardstown, and she survives.
    He is also survived by one son, Stephen of Jacksonville; two daughters, Patricia (husband, Doug) Miller of Quincy and Donna (husband, Pat) Scranton of Hull; five grandchildren; one stepsister, Wava (husband, Ray) Sorrell of Moline; and one aunt. He was preceded in death by three sons, Darrell Eugene Davis, Jerry Allen and one in infancy; and one brother, Leslie Wayne.
    Mr. Davis worked for Burrus Seed Farms at Arenzville for 46 years. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of the American Legion and loved gardening.
    Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Williamson Funeral Home, with burial at Arenzville North Cemetery. Friends may call after 3 p.m. today at the funeral home, where the family will meet friends from 6-8 p.m. Memorials are suggested to Hospice Care of Central Illinois, Jacksonville.

"Murder of John Davis. On yesterday afternoon Beardstown was the scene of a horrible murder which caused the death of John Davis, our county jailer, who was disgracefully murdered by Bion Shaw, son of J. Henry Shaw, of that place. The facts of the case as near as can be learned are as follows. Mr. Shaw and his son, a 19 year old lad, had met with some misunderstanding, and Mr. Shaw asked Mr. John Davis, a neighbor, to come into the yard and help him reconcile Bion. Mr. Davis stepped in through the gate and as he was approaching father and son, Bion pulled forth a revolver and without any just cause instantly fired at Mr. Davis, the ball taking effect and life was soon extinct. Assistance was summoned and although the boy resisted, he was soon captured and lodged in jail. The whole town was thrown into a furore, and lynch law was loudly talked of by the friends of Davis. To avoid this, a telegram was forwarded to Sheriff Epler in this city to ‘Come with a posse of men and prevent jail delivery.’ About six o’clock, the Sheriff with about 25 men well armed left for Beardstown for the purpose of bringing the prisoner to the new jail in this city for safety. In the meantime, Mayor Misenhemer, of Beardstown, secured a carriage, and the prisoner in charge Geo. Voulkmar and Marshal Tom. Doyle started for Virginia by an out-of-way road and arrived here about 7:30 p.m. and young Shaw was confined to a cell in the new jail and was watched over by Marshall Knowles during the night. Bion Shaw was brought up for examination this morning, but upon consultation it was decided to waive the preliminary, and the case will go before the Grand Jury as it stands.”

Mrs. Julia Ann, the wife of Edward Davis, died last Friday afternoon at 4 o’clock after a long illness of a complication of diseases at her home near Monroe precinct, aged 80 years, 8 months, and 7 days. The deceased was born December 24, 1819 in the state of Kentucky. On the first of November of the year 1838 she was united in marriage to Edward Davis. To this union nine children were born, of them three, namely James Hawkins, Travis Elmore, and Lemon preceeded their mother to life eternal. The six children living are Harriett, the wife of Wm. Way, Mary Elizabeth, Perry and Louise C., all of whom reside in this county; Itha, wife of John Hula of Oklahoma, and Elias, of Pine City, Washington. Mrs. Davis at the age of twenty years united with the primitive Baptist church of which she was a devoted member until death. She was a well know resident of this county living here for many years. A good wife, mother, friend and neighbor, she will be sadly missed. The many good qualities endeared her to all with whom she came in contact and by all she was held in highest esteem. The funeral services were conducted at her late residence by Elder John Scott, of Pleasant Plains, who delivered a short discourse. The interment followed at the old Clark cemetery.”

Lela Mae Davis  1919-2006 Virginia

   Lela Mae Davis, 87, of Virginia, died Tuesday morning July 11, 2006, at Walker Nursing Home in Virginia.
   She was born Feb. 6, 1919, in Pleasant Plains, the daughter of William G. and Emma Mudd Marr. She married Harold F. Davis on Dec. 22, 1940, in New London, Mo., and he survives. She is also survived by three daughters, Marilyn Kay (husband, Ron) Small of Houston, Judith Ann (husband, Robert) Wallace of Sarasota, Fla., and Linda Sue (husband, Ron) Yockey of Nauvoo; two sons, Harold Allen (wife, Patty) and Marvin Danny (wife, Teresa), both of Virginia; nine grandchildren, Richard Wallace, Ron Wallace, Roger Wallace, Brigit Bell, Scott Davis, John Davis, Ross Davis, Caye Perez and Megan Davis; 11 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Elmer Marr of Moline and Lester "Benny" Marr of Chandlerville; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by six brothers; and one sister.
   Mrs. Davis was a homemaker, assisted her husband in managing the family farm, and was an avid collector of dolls and dishes. She greatly enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
   Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at Massie-Buchanan Funeral Home in Virginia, with burial at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia.   "Mrs. Nancy Davis Died at Home Near Ashland Funeral Services were held at 2 o'clock this afternoon for Mrs. Nancy J. Davis, 78, who died Saturday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Samuel Orne, of Ashland, after two weeks' illness. Services were held at 2 o'clock this afternoon at the First Methodist Church in Ashland with the Rev. Charles L. Coleman in charge. Burial was in the Clark Cemetery west of Virginia.

   Mrs. Davis is survived by six daughters and six sons: Mrs. F.A. Hillig and Harry Davis, of Peoria; Ledru, Claude and Roy Davis, Mrs. Edward Hiles, Mrs. Perle Shebiel, of Beardstown; Edward Davis and Mrs. Richard Fanning, of  Virginia; Elmer Davis of Fort Lauderdale, FL.; and Mrs. E.S. Orne of Ashland. She is also survived by two brothers, William Dyche of Beardstown and John Dyche of Arenzville; thirty-five grandchildren and twenty-two great-grand children."

    Funeral services for William Arthur Davis, Road Commissioner at Bluff Springs, who died Thursday morning at St. John's Hospital in  Springfield, were held at 2:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon at Cline's Funeral Home.
    The Rev. R.C. Aden, pastor of St. John's Lutheran Church at Bluff Springs, officiated at the service.
    Harold Walker sang "The Lords Prayer" and was accompanied at the organ by Mrs. Harold Walker.
    The many flowers were arranged by Mrs. Fred Ruppel, Mrs. Gus Carls, Mrs. Claude [Davis?], Mrs. Elmer Davis and Mrs. Edward F. Kloker.
    Pallbearers were Frank Trussel, Edward F. Kloker, Gus Carls, Claude Davis, Fred Ruppel and Glen Miller.
    Burial was made in the City Cemetery and the American Legion had charge of the services at the grave. Dean Rockwell was chaplain; Tom
Morrow and Cline Brockman, color bearers; James Dorwart and C.C. Christensen color guards; Bill Bley and Charles Barron, Buglers; and the firing squad consisted of Harold Beaty, Wilbur Kennedy, Elmer Davis and Joe Matthews. Bob Lael was commander of the squad.

Hazel M. Dawson - 1913-2003 - Virginia

   Hazel M. Dawson, 89, of Virginia, died Tuesday morning, June 24, 2003 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.
   She was born Nov. 3, 1913 in Cass County, the daughter of Loran and Lucy Collins Arthalony. She married Homer F. "Jack" Dawson April 6, 1941 in Virginia, and he preceded in death Oct. 29, 1972.
   She is survived by a sister, Betty Siltman of Chandlerville; several nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by one son, Ken Lee in 1945 and three brothers, Adrian Arthalony, Raymond Arthalony (surviving wife, Eileen of Jacksonville), and Leo Arthalony.
   Mrs. Dawson was employed several years as an accountant for a road construction company in Arizona prior to her retirement.
   Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday at the Massie-Buchanan Funeral Home in Virginia with burial at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia. Alberta L. Dearing 1922-2001

Alberta L. Dearing, 79, of Chandlerville, died Saturday morning, Dec. 1, 2001, at the home of her daughter in Ashland.

She was born March 30, 1922, in Cass County, the daughter of Louis and Fern Dupes Cox.   She married Harry Dearing, Jr. Feb. 14, 1945 at the Cass County Courthouse, in Virginia, and he survives.

She is also survived by one son, Norman Dale (wife, Margaret) of Beardstown, two daughters, Wanda (husband, Len) Shoemaker of Hankamer, Texas, and Connie (husband, Tom) Holmes of Ashland; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three brothers, Jack Cox of Glasford, Donald (wife, Sue) Cox of Virginia and Norman (wife, Joan) Cox of Galesburg; one sistere, Betty (husband, Dave) Kaonohi of Oak Ridge, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brother, Eugene and Gerald Cox.

Mrs. Dearing was employed for several years at Vollmer's Grocerty Store in Chandlerville. She was a member of the Chandlerville Christian Church and the Chandlerville American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed crocheting and cooking.

Funeral services will be held 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Lintner-Buchanan Funeral Home in Chandlerville, with burial at the Chandlerville Cemetery. Friends may call after 3 p.m. Monday at the funeral home where family will meet friends from 7-9 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the Cass-Schuyler Area Hospice or the Cass County Health Department.

    "Harry Dearing, Jr., 80, of Chandlerville, died Monday afternoon, Sept. 30, 2002 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.
    He was born July 11, 1922, in Cass County, the son of Harry Sr. and Sylvia Watkins Dearing. He married Alberta L. Cox Feb. 14, 1945,
at the Cass County Courthouse in Virginia, and she preceded in death December 1, 2001.

    Mr. Dearing was a farmer and also served as a bus driver and custodian for Chandlerville schools. He later was employed as a meat cutter for Oscar Mayer in Beardstown. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a 37-year member of Chandlerville American Legion Post 694.
    Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Lintner-Buchanan Funeral Home in Chandlerville, with burial at Chandlerville Cemetery.

   Karen S. Dearing, 56 years, of Kilbourne, IL died Sunday afternoon, November 20, 2005 at her residence.
   She was born July 30, 1949 in Springfield, IL; the daughter of Phillip N. and Rose M. Dobson Willing.
   She is survived by three sons, James (wife, Molly) Dearing of Kilbourne, Chris (wife, Pam) Dearing of Springfield, and Alen (wife, Kristy) Dearing of Divernon, IL; five grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; four brothers, Thomas (wife, Diane) Willing of Kilbourne, Clarence "Bud" Willing of Kilbourne, Timothy (wife, Cheryl) Willing of Jacksonville, NC, Michael (wife, Maggie) Willing of Chandlerville, IL; one sister, Barbara Lewis of Kilbourne; and several nieces and nephews.
   She was preceded in death by her parents.
   She was a Rehabilitation Aide at Sunny Acres Nursing Home in Petersburg prior to her illness. She enjoyed attending garage sales, gardening and was a avid Bingo player. She was a member of the Kilbourne Community Church.
   Funeral services will be held at Noon on Wednesday November 23, 2005 at the Kilbourne Community Church in Kilbourne with burial in the Kilbourne Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM Tuesday, at the Lintner-Buchanan Funeral Home in Chandlerville. Blanche DeLess 1901-2002
    Blanche DeLess, 100, of Heritage Manor South in Beardstown, formerly of Clayton, died Monday evening, Nov. 11, 2002, at the nursing home.
    She was born Nov. 22, 1901, in Fulton County, the daughter of Walker and Martha Graham Bolton. She married William DeLess June 14, 1923, in Macomb, and he preceded her in death Jan. 14, 1991.    She is survived by one daughter, Mary (husband, Jack) Gist of Beardstown; two grandsons; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Kent Bolton; and one sister, Clara Shank.
    Mrs. DeLess and her husband owned and operated the Polka Dot Shoppe in Clayton from 1955-1975. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Royal Neighbors, Modern Quest Reading Club and Clayton Lioness Club. She was a member of the First Federated Church of Clayton, where she served as Sunday school superintendent and was district young people's officer and a member of the Dorcas Class. She
graduated from Clayton High School and attended Western Illinois University.
    Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Thursday at the Hamilton Funeral Home in Clayton, with burial at South Side Cemetery in Clayton. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. until the time of services Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the First Federation Church of Clayton or to Heritage Manor South in Beardstown.

Mary K. Derrick - 1935-2003 - Virginia

   Mary K. Derrick, 67 years, of Virginia, died Friday morning, May 30, 2003 at St. John's Hospice in Springfield.
   She was born June 20, 1935 in Springfield, the daughter of Otto L. and Alice Ione Taylor Dour. She married Michael A. Derrick Jan. 18, 1957, in Sacramento, Calif., and they were later divorced in August of 1967.
   She is survived by a son, Jeffery (wife, Ann) of Springfield and three nieces. She was preceded in death by one half-brother, Robert D. Dour.
   Mrs. Derrick was a graduate of Virginia High School and attended Western Illinois University in Macomb. She was previously employed at the Illinois Department of Revenue, Thompson Jewelry Store in Jacksonville, the Office of the Illinois Superintendent of Public Instruction, Illinois Secretary of State, and from 1974 until her retirement in 1997 at Four Rivers Special Education Office in Jacksonville. She was active in the Republican Party as a member of the State and National G.O.P. Women and served as a past president and member of the Cass County Republican Women. She was also active in the National and State Associations of Education Office Professionals, serving on the State Board for 14 years. She was a member and a former deacon and elder of the First Presbyterian Church in Virginia and a member of the Jacksonville Women of the Moose. She formerly served as a board member of the Virginia Memorial Public Library, the Wells Center in Jacksonville, the Women's Crisis Center in Jacksonville, and the Cass County Home Extension.
   Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church in Virginia with burial at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia.   Bernice Francisco Devlin, 80, of rural Ashland, died Tuesday evening, March 15, 2005, at St. John’s Hospice in Springfield.
   She was born Jan. 18, 1925, in Springfield, the daughter of Lawrence and Ida Brandt Francisco. She married James Patrick “Pat” Devlin on Nov. 27, 1954 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Springfield, and he survives.
   She is also survived by three daughters, Karen Devlin of Springfield, Patricia “Trish” (husband, Rodney) Pugh of Davenport, Iowa, and Debra Devlin of Chelmsford, Mass.; one son, Larry (wife, Connie) of Ashland; two grandchildren, Phillip and Brandon Pugh, both of Davenport, Iowa; two stepgrandchildren, Karmen Knowles of Chatham and Christina (husband, Chad) Newbern of Beardstown; three stepgreatgrandchildren; one brother, Fred (wife, Jacqueline) Francisco of Spaulding; one sister, Genevieve Cowden (husband, Tom) of Springfield; 23 nieces and nephews; two half nieces; and one half nephew. She was preceded in death by one brother, George Francisco; one sister, Maxine Fettis; one half brother, Jim Francisco; and two half sisters, Margaret Uleg and Esther Curfman.
   Mrs. Devlin was a 1943 graduate of Feitshans High School in Springfield and was employed 10 years with Franklin Life Insurance Co. in Springfield. The balance of her life was devoted to being a farm wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church in Ashland and the church’s Alter Society. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting and solving puzzles.
   Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Ashland, with burial at St. Augustine Catholic Cemetery, west of Ashland. NORMAL -- Frances Eleanor Devlin, 85, of 530 E. Beardstown St, Virginia, Ill., formerly of Normal, died at 9 p.m. Friday (April 11, 2003) at Walker Nursing Home, Virginia.
    Her private inurnment will be in Park Hill Cemetery, Bloomington, at a later date. There will be no visitation Stubblefield-Calvert Memorial Home, Normal, is in charge of arrangements.

    She was born Dec. 11, 1917, in Green County, the daughter of Lester Own and Forrest Florence. Survivors include four sons, Hal (Sharon) Ruyle, Charleston; Donald E. (Becky) Devlin, Martinez, Ga.; Michael K. (Sandy) Devlin, Garden City, Ga.; and Dennis "Pat" ( Donna) Devlin, Ashland; one daughter, Reta (Alvin) Mardis, Normal; four sisters, Freda Fern McElroy, Roadhouse; Dorothy E. Warcup, Jacksonville; Patsy Caravan, Springfield; and Doris E. Trummel, Golconda; 29 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; one son; one daughter; two brothers; and one sister.
    She was affiliated with the Richwoods Baptist Church, Roodhouse. She was an avid reader and enjoyed gardening and watching country western videos. She was a member of Richwoods Baptist Church, Roodhouse.

Frank Devlin Rites To Be Held Saturday
    Funeral services for Frank Charles Devlin, who died suddenly at his home Wednesday morning at 7:35, will be held Saturday morning at 9 a.m. at St. Augustine church with Rev. Vincent Heraty in charge.
    Mr. Devlin was born in Cass county, July 9, 1884, the son of John E. Devlin and Mary Drain. He married Anna Unger in Springfield, Nov. 25, 1925.
    He was a member of St. Augustine church. He served as assessor of Philadelphia township for 30 years, resigning that position several years ago.
    He is survived by the following children: Sister JoNette Devlin O.S.F., St. John's Hospital, Mary Margaret Devlin and John William Devlin, Ashland; Harry Devlin, Jacksonville and William J. Devlin, Virginia; one sister, Mrs. Margaret Mahoney, Ashland. Two  brothers, John and Arthur preceded him in death.
    Interment will be in St. Augustine cemetery.
    Friends may call at the Devlin residence after 1 p.m. Thursday.

SERVICES HELD WEDNESDAY FOR MRS. F. DEVLIN - Passes Away Sunday
Evening At Her Home
    Mrs. Frances Ann Devlin, 64, a lifelong resident of this vicinity passes away at her home near Philadelphia Sunday at 11:05 p.m.  after a lingering illness.
    Mrs. Devlin was born Oct. 3, 1888 in this city, the daughter of Elijah and Susan Beach Plummer. She was married to James Leo  Devlin, Nov. 26, 1914, at Ashland, and was a member of St. Augustine church in Ashland.
    She was preceeded in death by her parents, two sisters, two daughters and a son.
    Surviving besides her husband are two sons, Leo F. Devlin, Philadelphia, and James Patrick, at home; three daughters, Mrs. Raymond Mahoney, Pleasant Plains, Mary Ann and Margaret Patricia Devlin at home; two brothers, Lee Plummer of Chicago and  Charles Plummer of this city; four sisters, Mrs. Bruce Birmingham, Chicago; Mrs. Carl Ericson, McLean, Va.; Mrs. B.A. Springer and  Mrs. Carroll Knight of this city.
    Remains were removed to the Gainer Funeral home.
    Funeral services were held at 9 a.m. Wednesday at St. Augustine church in Ashland with Rev. Vincent Heraty officiating. Music was  furnished by Misses Rosaleen and Mary Margaret Devlin accompanied by Mrs. Jack Gardner on the organ. Pallbearers were nephews of the deceased, John Devlin, Jack Mahoney, Leo Reiser, John H. Devlin, William Yaple and Jack O'Brian.
    Flowers were cared for by Mrs. Alfred Cosner, Mrs. Jesse McNeeley, Mrs. Frank Davey, Mrs. Seth McClintick, Mrs. Armour Adkins, Mrs. Harry Daniel, Mrs. Howard Collins, Mrs. William Lange, Mrs. Margaret Brown, Mrs. Harold Jacobs, and Mrs. Henry Votsmier.
    Burial was in St. Augustine cemetery, Ashland."

      Funeral services were held at St. Augustine Church, Ashland at 10 a.m. July 25 for James Leo Devlin, retired farmer who was found dead at his home near Ashland at 7:10 a.m. Thursday, July 21. Remains were removed to the Gainer Funeral Home Ashland and returned to the family residence Sunday morning. Officiating at the requiem high mass were Rev. Henry Kozak, Rev. Eugene Griffin, Rev. Vincent Heraty and Rev. James McBride. Pallbearers were John H. Devlin, John W. Devlin, John M. Mahoney, Leo M.   Reiser, Carl Davis and Robert L. Plummer. Burial was in St. Augustine Cemetery.
      Mr. Devlin was born in Cass County in the Centenary Community March 20, 1889 - the son of John and Mary Drain Devlin. He  was married to Frances Plummer November 26, 1914 at Ashland. She preceded him in death July 13, 1952 and two daughters and one son died in infancy. One sister and four brothers also preceded him in death.
      Surviving are two sons and three daughters, Leo F. Devlin, James F. Devlin and Margaret F. Devlin, Ashland, Mrs. Raymond Mahoney, Pleasant Plains and Mrs. Raymond Ruppel of Virginia. Also surviving are sixteen grandchildren and one brother Harry Devlin of Jacksonville.

    John Devlin, one of Ashland's prominent retired farmers and respected citizen, passed away at his home in the north part of  town at 9:35 o'clock Wednesday morning after an illness of several weeks, at the age of 78 years.

  "Mrs. Mary A. Devlin Succumbs Yesterday; Funeral Tomorrow
     Mrs. Mary Ann Devlin, mother of Wm. J. Devlin of this city, passed away at the home of her son, Frank C. Devlin, yesterday  morning at 11 o'clock.
    Mary Ann Drain was born in Ireland on May 12, 1853. She was married to John Devlin on January 4, 1875. The couple came to Virginia immediately following the marriage and spent the remainder of their lives in and around Virginia.
    They were the parents of six children, John E., Frank C., Harry A., Leo J., Wm. J. and Mrs. Margaret Mahoney. Twenty five grand-  children and three greatgrandchildren survive.
    Mr. Devlin died on May 4, 1932.
    Funeral services will be held tomorrow morning at 9:30 o'clock at St. Augustine's Catholic Church in Ashland. Burial will be in St.  Augustine cemetery."

MARY J. DEVLIN RITES ARE HELD HERE WEDNESDAY - Local Woman Passed Away Sunday at Hospital
    Last rites for Mary J. Devlin, 49, well known local professional woman and employed as linotype operator at the plant of The Virginia
Gazette, were held at St. Luke's church here Wednesday morning with the high requiem mass ceremony with Rev. V.C. Goyke, celebrant. Father Goyke paid a most fitting tribute to the deceased, who was a faithful member of the local Catholic church.
    Miss Devlin became suddenly ill about the 20th of December when she went to the St. John's hospital in Springfield for treatment. She never recovered sufficiently to allow a planned operation. She passed away at 5:30 p.m. Sunday at the hospital. Devlin; and nephew, Thomas Mahoney at home; one sister, Mrs. Stuart J. Reid of this city; two brothers, Will of Springfield and John of this city, also several nieces and nephews.
    The funeral services were largely attended here Wednesday. Casket bearers were Thomas Finn, P.J. Lockhart, Franklin Dooling, Martin Mahoney, Marion Walker of this city and Tim Doolin of Ashland. Music was furnished by Leo Whalen of Beardstown, and Mesdames Elmer
Sudbrink, Clifford Schall and Virgil Engle, with Miss Frances Whalen at the organ. Interment was in the Walnut Ridge Cemetery.
    Those who attended the services from out of town included Frank McBride of Debuque, Ia., Mrs. John Duncheon and Louis Duncheon of
Jacksonville; J.D. Reid, Chicago; Margaret Reid, Frances Whalen, Mr. and Mrs. Will Devlin and son of Springfield; Mr. and Mrs. James Newell and Mr. and Mrs. Tim Doolin and son of Ashland; Leo Whalen of Beardstown."

  Memorial Rites Held Monday For W.J. Devlin, Prominent Resident
    "Sadness has again fallen in our little community with the passing of a beloved friend and neighbor, William Joseph Devlin, 72.
    Mr. Devlin passed away as [at]12:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 17, at Our Saviour's hospital. He had been in ill health for sometime.
    He was born April 10, 1891 near Ashland, son of John Edward and Mary Ann Drain Devlin. On Oct. 26, 1920, he was married to Rose Mary
Hade, who survives.
    Also surviving is one son, John Hade, Lake Bluff, Ill.; three daughters, Mrs. Don (Mary) Mefford of Green Bay, Wisc., Miss Rosaleen Devlin of St. Louis, Mo., and Mrs. James (Helen) Mills of Tucson, Arz.; two brothers, Leo of Ashland and Harry of Jacksonville, and twelve grandchildren.
    Mr. Devlin was president of the Petefish, Skiles and Co. bank, which position he had held for the past four years. He was an employee of the bank for 41 years. He was a member of St. Luke's Catholic church, the Holy Name Society and Knights of Columbus in Jacksonville. He was a charter member of American Legion Post 258 and County Commander. He served in the Army Engineer corps in World War I.
    Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. Monday at St. Luke's Catholic church, the Rev. Henry Kozak, Rev. Eugene Griffin, Rev. Michael Henchan and Rev. Vincent Harety, officiating.
    Music was by Miss Mary Margaret Devlin, Miss Margaret Devlin and Mrs. Alvena Reiser.
    Pallbearers were Leo Reiser, Leo Devlin, Patrick Devlin, Glennon Mahoney, John Devlin and Vincent Devlin.
    An American flag was presented to Mrs. Devlin by John R. Graves, in behalf of the American Legion Post 258, at the graveyard.
    Burial was made in Walnut Ridge Cemetery.

Funeral Services Held For Mrs. E. E. Divver

    Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon for Mrs. Elmer E. Divver, Arenzville at 2 o'clock at the Trinity Lutheran church, Rev. E. F. Tonn officiated and burial was in the city cemetery.
    Rose Kircher Divver passed away at her home in Arenzville Sunday evening after a lingering illness. She was born September 11, 1879, a daughter of John and Elizabeth Rahn Kircher and was married to E. E. Divver in October, 1908. She was a lifelong resident of the Arenzville community.
    Surviving are her husband, one daughter, Mrs. Howard Tucker of Beardstown, and 3 grandchildren. She is also survived by the following brothers and sisters:

James Dodd, Aged 60, Dies

Funeral Services Will Be Held Sunday

   James A. Dodd, 60 years old, an employee of the Burlington railroad on the Beardstown division for 33 years and an engineer for 30 years, died at 11:30 o'clock last night in Schmitt Memorial Hospital where he had been a patient since Wednesday.
    Mr. Dodd had been in poor health, having submitted to two surgical operations several months ago.   However, he apparently had recuperated and had resumed his regular run for the Burlington and had not missed a day's work in weeks, when he was stricken again on Tuesday.

Funeral Sunday

    The body was taken to the Cline Funeral Home to be prepared for burial and was later returned to the late home, 1000 Jefferson Street, to lie in state until the hour of the funeral.  Services will be held at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Edwin Sommer in charge.  Burial will be in the the City Cemetery.
    Mr. Dodd is survived by his wife, Etta; a son, Ellis of California; two daughter, Mrs. Ruth Keeling of Rushville and Mrs. Lyla Larson of Chicago; and a grandson, Barry Hayden Keeling of Rushville. Also surviving are five sisters and a brother, all of Rock Falls.
    The sisters are:   Mrs. Emma Soules, Mrs. Nellie Gibson, Mrs. Stella Cappie, Mrs. Earl Williams and Mrs. Alice Taylor, and the brother is Daniel Dodd.

Funeral of John Dodson held at M.E. Church Sunday

   John Martin Dodson was born in Hardin, Calhoun Co. ILL, July 8, 1853 and died at his home in this city friday Nov 3, 1916, after a lingering illness at the age of 63 years, 9 months 25 days.
   Mr. Dodson's mother died when he was five months old, and he was taken by his aunt, Mrs Fielden P. Wheeler of Chandlerville to raise, with whom he lived until his marriage to Miss Charlotte Cowen, June 1, 1882. To this union were born two children, Ben Dodson and Mrs. Roy Schaeffer, who wtih the bereaved wife are left to mourn his sad departure. He also leaves one brother Jesse L.Dodson of Baker City Oregon and one sister Mrs. (Elizabeth A. Dodson) Charles E. Hartley of Republic, Ferry County, Washington.
   About 24 years ago he became a member of the Primitive Baptist Church. This faith he maintained to the time of his death. He had lived in and near Chandlerville practically all of his life.
   Funeral service at the M.E. Church Sunday 2 O'clock, servcice by Rev. J. N. Meaker of Bath, assisted by Rev. R. L. Cartwright, music by Mrs. Ora Shankland, Miss Doris Anderson, Ora Shankland and W.D. Leeper. Interment in the village Cemetery.

    Mrs. Arneda Dotzert, age 88 of Rural Route #1, Beardstown, died at Beardstown Hospital-Health Care Complex at 8:35 a.m. Saturday October 26, 1985.
     She was born August 11, 1897 in Cass Co., IL., the daughter of Arthur G. and Lena B. Philippi Korte. She married Frank Carl Dotzert February 27, 1949 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Bluff Springs. Mr. Dotzert died October 14, 1962.
     She was also preceded in death by: her parents; three sisters, Mrs. Henry (Inez) Fiedler, Mrs. Clarence (Laura) Blum and Miss Amelia Korte;
three brothers, Herman, Robert and Homer Korte.
     She was confirmed and lifelong member of St. John's Lutheran Church of Bluff Springs where services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday with Pastor J. Edward Osborne of the church the officiating clergyman. Mrs. Dotzert will be taken to the church at 1 p.m. (one hour prior to the service) to lie in state until time of services. Interment will be in the Beardstown City Cemetery.
     Visitation will be at the Cline Funeral Home Tuesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
     The family has requested that friends wishing to give may contribute to the St. John's Lutheran Church Memorial Fund.
     Mrs. Dotzert is survived by: seven nieces, Mrs. Charles (Elizabeth) Flowers of Beardstown, Mrs. Edwin (Doris) Stock of R.R. 1, Beardstown, Mrs. Fred (Carolyn) Lauder of Quincy, IL., Mrs. Marjorie Bierhaus of Virginia, IL., Mrs. Leo (Ruth) Wankel of Springfield, IL., and Mrs. John (Joan) Wagner of Chillicothe, IL.; and three nephews, Glen Fiedler of R.R. 1, Beardstown, Merle Korte of Greenview, IL.and Norman Korte of Davenport, Iowa. Also surviving are eight great nieces and nephews and one great great nephew.
     Although she had no children of her own, Mrs. Dotzert was a second mother to many of her nieces and nephews.

"FUNERAL HELD SUNDAY AFT AT BLUFF SPRINGS - Katherine Dotzert Dies At Home Thursday
      Mrs. Katherine Dotzert, widow of the late Henry Dotzert, died Thursday morning ather home south of Bluff Springs, just five days before her 73rd birthday anniversary.
      Born in Chandlerville July 23, 1879, she was the daughter of John and Ann Leinberger. She was married to Henry Dotzert on March 20, 1902 and they moved to their home a few miles south of Bluff Springs in 1914.
      Mr. Dotzert, died in 1945.
      She was also preceded in death by two daughters who died in infancy, and one son, Paul, who was killed in action in Tunisia, April 23, 1943, during World War II.
      Mrs. Dotzert is survived by five sons, Harry, Julius, William, Frank and Fred; four daughters, Mrs. Harold Nordsiek, Mrs. Homer Korte and Mrs. Dave Alcorn of near Beardstown, and Miss Martha Dotzert at home. Fourteen grandchildren survive.
      Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the St. John's Ev. Lutheran church in Bluff Springs.
      The Rev. R.E. Aden, pastor of the church, conducted the services.
      Mrs. William Huffman and Mrs. Roscoe Reichert sang "In The Garden", "Asleep in Jesus" and "In The Hour of Trial", accompanied by William Huffman.
      Flowers were arranged by Mrs. David Krieg, Mrs. James Fischer, Mrs. Raymond Bingham, Miss Kathryn Selvidge, Mrs. Clarence Stier and Mrs. Julia Gotting.
      Pallbearers were Clarence Stier, August Ruppel, Arthur J. Ruppel, Louis Sweatman, Otto Sweatman and John Fielder.
      Interment was the family lot in the Rose Hill cemetery at Petersburg."

     Mary E. Dotzert, 79, of rural Beardstown, died early Wednesday morning, Oct. 25, 2000, at the Culbertson Memorial Hospital in Rushville.
     She was born Sept. 29, 1921, in Woodson, the daughter of Lz and Eula Wilson Virgin. She married Clarence E. Dotzert June 15, 1940, in New London, Mo., and he preceded her in death on Dec. 4, 1998.
     She is survived by four sons, Jerry (wife, Patsy), David C., (wife, Sue), Michael (wife, Joyce) and Douglas, all of Beardstown; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Aileen Emerick and Bernice (husband, Bob) Loughary, both of Beardstown.
     Mrs. Dotzert graduated from Beardstown High School in the class of 1940. She was a member of the St. John¹s Lutheran Church in Bluff Springs. She farmed with her husband in Cass County for 50 years. When her children were young, she worked at Woolworths in Beardstown. In recent years she worked at the Beardstown Elks Club and as an election judge for Precinct 2 in Beardstown. Mrs. Dotzert enjoyed ³going to coffee² with her friends.
     Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Sager Funeral Home, with burial at Beardstown City Cemetery. Friends may call after 4 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, with the family meeting friends from 5-7 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the Cass-Schuyler Area Hospice or the Cass County Visiting Nurses.

Henry Berger and Junior Drinkwater Are Victims, Third Man Also Dead in Collision of Two Trucks Near Granite City on Highway 111

    Three men, including Henry Berger, 50, and Ernest Junior Drinkwater, 21, both of Beardstown, were killed early today in a head-on collision between two-livestock trucks on state route 111 near Roxana between Granite City and Wood River.
    Raymond L. Frank, 26, of New Berlin was the other victim in the crash.
    Frank's truck which was empty and which was being driven north, collided head-on with a stock truck loaded with cattle driven by Berger and also occupied by Drinkwater, shortly after midnight half mile south of the Canal Bridge on route 111.
    Leonard E. Simpson of Pleasant Plains who was asleep in Frank's truck, was reported unhurt although both trucks were overturned.
    The bodies were taken to Mercer's Mortuary in Granite City where an inquest was scheduled for 8 p.m.
    Mr. Berger, a widely known stock raiser who resided about 4 miles south of here on state highway 100 near the Edgewood school, and young Drinkwater left here last night with the load of cattle, bound for market.
    Drinkwater had supper with his mother, Lizzie Drinkwater, 309 1/2 East Sixth street and told her that he was going to go to market with Mr. Berger. The young man made his home with his grandmother, Mrs. Mary Drinkwater, who lives south of Beardstown.
    Members of the Berger family said today that Mr. Berger and a companion, left the Berger farm between 7 and 8 o'clock last night with a load of seven cattle in a 1936 International truck in which Mr. Berger had made a trip to St. Louis with other stock the previous night.
    They said that Mr. Berger had previously driven the Alton route to St. Louis, and they were surprised to learn of him traveling through Granite City on last night's trip.
    Henry Frederick Berger, stockman and farmer, was born April 15, 1897 at the homestead four miles south of Beardstown on route 100 which was his home all his life. He was commissioner of the Valley Drainage District, and with his brother and sister, farmed 1600 acres in the South Beardstown and Valley districts.
    His father, David Berger, died 19 years ago, and his mother died six years ago.
    Surviving are his brother, Edward Berger, and sister, Mary Berger, both at home.
    Young Drinkwater was born at Virginia May 10, 1926 and attended Waggoner Bridge school. He was employed as a farm laborer and lived 9 1/2 miles south of Beardstown with his grandmother, his great uncle Ed Bolejack and an aunt Sarah Drinkwater. They survive with the mother, and the following aunts and uncles: Charles Walter, Edward and Frank Drinkwater, Mrs. Lydia Harris, Mrs. Rachel Burnett and Mrs. Ollie Williams.
    The bodies of the two men will be brought to the Cline Funeral Home here.

Kimberly Sue Noel Duckwiler 1969-2002
      Kimberly Sue Noel Duckwiler, 33, of Ashland, died Sunday evening, Oct. 6, 2002, at St. John's Hospital in Springfield.
      She was born July 17, 1969, in Beardstown, the daughter of James L. and Sue Olroyd Noel. She married Travis W. Duckwiler Oct. 13,
1995, in Ashland, and he survives.
      She is also survived by two sons, Samuel Little and Matthew Little, both of Ashland; one daughter, Leah Duckwiler of Ashland; her parents of Ashland; one brother, Dennis Noel of Ashland; her paternal grandparents, Jake and Lorene Olroyd of Virginia; three nieces; and several aunts and uncles. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Harold Noel.
      Mrs. Duckwiler was a 1987 graduate of Ashland High School and was employed at Casey's General Store and CCB Credit Service in Springfield. Halloween was her favorite season and she enjoyed decorating and dressing up for the holiday.
      A public visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at the Massie-Buchanan Funeral Home in Ashland. Cremation rites will be accorded following the visitation. Private family committal services will be held at a later date. Memorials are suggested to the Ashland Volunteer Fire Department.

    She was born in Beardstown, December 4, 1875, daughter of Adam and Elizabeth Schweer Rupple.
    She is survived by a daughter Mrs. Howard Peck of Springfield, a granddaughter, Mrs. Louis Haasis of Denver, Colo. and one great grandchild.
    Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Arenzville with the Rev. George Bischoff officiating. Burial will be in the family lot at the church cemetery.
    Friends may call at the Northcutt Funeral Home in Beardstown from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday.
