    Lace Bailey, 63, of the Illinois Veterans Home, formerly of Ashland, a retired veterinary assistant, died at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday (Feb. 27, 1990) in Schapers hospital at the home.
    Mr. Bailey was born July 11, 1926, in Ashland, a son of Lace R. and Julie Cooper Bailey. He married Martha Tucker. During World War II, he served in the Army. He was of the Protestant faith.
    Survivors include two sons, Robert Bailey of Auburn, and John Bailey of Prentice; two brothers, Wade Bailey of Springfield and Ken Bailey; four sisters, Vivian Skaggs of California, Jackie Mathy of Ashland, Clara White of Milan and Julia Vandeviner of Decatur; and several grandchildren.
    Graveside services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday in Yatesville Cemetery at Ashland. There will be no visitation but friends are invited to the services. The Duker and Haugh Funeral Home is the arrangements.

Helen E. Baker - 1911-2003 - Beardstown

   Helen E. Baker, 91, of Beardstown and formerly of Jacksonville, died Sunday afternoon, March 9, 2003, at Heritage Manor South in Beardstown.
   She was born Dec. 29, 1911, in Waverly, the daughter of Harry and Maude Homes Morris. She married Clifford T. Baker Nov. 29, 1930, in Jacksonville, and he preceded her in death in 1963.
   She is survived by one son, Kenneth (wife, Lillie) of Springfield; three daughters, Barbara Caster of Beardstown, Rose (husband, Steve) Claggett of Peoria, and Wanda (husband, Charlie) Berry of Manchester, Tenn.; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two sons in infancy, Clifford Jr. and James; and two brothers.
   Mrs. Baker attended school in Waverly and was a homemaker.
   Graveside funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at Waverly East Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Heritage Manor South Staff in Beardstown. Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown is in charge of arrangements. Condolences may be sent to the family online at sagerfh@casscomm.com.

Supervisor's Wife Is Dead, Mrs. T. L. Barber Passes Away

    Lucy Estelle Barber, 62 years old, the wife of T. L. Barber, prominent and veteran supervisor from Sangamon Valley township, died at 8:45 this morning in her home five miles northeast of Virginia. She had been ill for several months.
    The body was taken to the Massie Funeral home in Virginia to be prepared for burial, and the funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon at the Virginia Methodist church. The Rev. O. F. Jones will be in charge and the burial will be at Walnut Ridge cemetery.
    Mrs. Barber was born August 23, 1877 near Arenzville, the daughter of John and Elizabeth Kircher. She was 62 years and 19 days of age at the time of her death.
    Surviving besides her husband are two children Joy of Virginia, and Mrs. Gladys Dahman of Franklin, Illinois; two grandchildren, Billie and Delores Ann Barber; three sisters, Mrs. Lee Beard and Mrs. Rose Deivers of Arenzville, and Mrs. Anna Winhold of Virginia; and four brothers, William, Henry and Frank Kircher of Arenzville, and E. H. Kircher of Savageton, Wyoming.

Pearl A. Barber - 1908-2003 - Virginia

   Pearl A. Barber, 95, of Christmas Valley, Oregon and formerly of Virginia, died Tuesday morning, July 22, 2003 at the St. Charles Medical Center in Bend, Oregon.
   She was born May 22, 1908 in Beardstown, the daughter of Ray and Bertha Webster Matthew. She married Joy O. Barber on June 4, 1925 in Virginia, and he preceded in death on August 29, 1992.
   She is survived by two daughters, Delores (husband, Charles) Raedel of Christmas Valley, Ore., and Sue (husband, John) Kotch of Castle Rock, Colo.; 13 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Kay Wright; one son, William; two grandchildren; one brother, Rodney Matthew; and three sisters, Opal Sterling, Evelyn Skiles, and Annabel Wilcox.
   Mrs. Barber was employed by the Emporium in Jacksonville for 17 years. She was a member of the Virginia United Methodist Church.
   Graveside funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003 at the Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia. There will be no visitation. Memorial gifts are suggested to the Virginia United Methodist Church. The Massie-Buchanan Funeral Home in Virginia is in charge of the arrangements. T. L. Barber, 87, Virginia, Supervisor for 8 Years, Dies

    T. L. Barber, 87, retired farmer of near Virginia who for eight years served as Sangamon Valley township supervisor, died at 4 p.m. Friday at Our Saviou's hospital in Jacksonville after a short illness.
    He was a member of the board of the Cass County Service company for 20 years.
    Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Grace Lutheran church in Virginia. The Rev. Robert Stone will officiate. Burial will be in Walnut Ridge cemetery near Virginia.
    The body was removed from the Massie Funeral home to the Barber residence today where it will remain until one hour before services and then it will be taken to the church.
    Thomas Leonard Barber was born in Morgan county May 1, 1873, son of William and Louisa Barber.
    He was united in marriage to Lucy Kircher December 26, 1899. Two children were born to this union, a son, Joy Barber, who resides in Virginia; and a daughter, Mrs. Gladys Dahman, now of Franklin. Lucy Kircher Barber died in 1939.
    Mr. Barber married Mrs. Amanda Strubbe Rieman on Feb. 4, 1942. She survives.
    Mr. Barber is also survived by six grandchildren; a brother Harry Barber of Jacksonville, and two sisters, Mrs. Edna Loughary of Jacksonville and Mrs. O. W. Gould of Franklin.

    Wm. BARKLEY, prominent Virginia citizen and well known Cass county land owner, passed away at this home in this city Saturday morning, December 4, after an illness of only about two weeks duration. His death cam as a shock to his many friends as only about two weeks ago he was about town. Mr. BARKLEY was a man of excellent character and through his generosity his church received much financial help, as well as several needy families.
    Wm. BARKLEY was born in Albany, Mo., April 14, 1844 and died at his home in this city Saturday, December 4, 1915, aged 71 years. He came to Illinois when 31 years of age and May 7, 1871 he was married to Miss Nannie MCDONALD. They lived on the home farm until 1885 when they moved to their present home in Virginia. Mr. BARKLEY united with the Methodist Episcopal church in 1898 and that event marked a complete change in his life. For a number of years he has been a member of the official board of his church and has been foremost in rendering financial help. Fraternally he was a member of the M.W.A. and the local order of A.F. & A.M. He leaves to mourn him, his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Pearl BLEY and baby of Beardstown and friends without number.
    Funeral services were Tuesday afternoon at 2 o' clock from the Methodist Episcopal church, Rev. C.F. JUVINALL officiating and interment was made in Walnut Ridge cemetery. The members of the official board of the Methodist Episcopal church acted as pallbearers and the church choir sang "O Happy Day," "Nearer My God to Thee" and "Jesus Lover or My Soul."

    Mrs. Wm. BARCLAY, mother of Mrs. Walter C. BLEY of this city passed away here in the home of her daughter at 8 o' clock last night. The deceased has been in poor health for several months but became seriously ill about ten days ago. She was very tenderly cared for and everything possible was done for her relief, but she gradually grew weaker, succumbing last night.
    Mrs. BARCLAY was born near Virginia, Ill. and was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John F. MCDONALD, pioneer residents of Cass county. She was united in marriage to Mr. Wm. BARCLAY on August 7th, 1871, and from that time until the death of her husband which occurred in December, 1915, was a resident of Virginia, Ill. Since the death of Mr. BARCLAY, she has spent the winter months here with her daughter, Mrs. BLEY, residing in her home in Virginia during the summer.
    She was a woman of sterling worth and a great lover of her home and family being very self sacrificing in behalf of those dear to her. She was especially devoted to her grandson Billie BARCLAY BLEY.
    She has been an almost life long member of the Methodist church in Virginia and has a large number of friends both in the church and in the social circles of that city as well as in this city, who, with the family will mourn her loss.
    She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Walter C. BLEY and one grandson Billie BARCLAY BLEY of this city.
    Funeral services will be held here Sunday afternoon from the home of Dr. and Mrs. BLEY at 2:00 o' clock with Rev. C.R. BOOTH, pastor of the M.E. church here in charge. Interment will be in the Walnut Ridge cemetery at Virginia.

    Elizabeth Treadway, was born near Monroe, Cass county, Illinois, May 12, 1830, and departed this life Nov. 24, 1906, aged 76 years, 6 months and 12 days. With the exception of about 13 years she spent all her life in Cass county.
    She was married to Rev. Joseph S. Barwick, July 29, 1877, with whom she lived in the work of the ministry until he died October 5, 1890, leaving her to mourn the loss of her companion and friend. She was converted at a revival held in a school house in Sangamon county by Rev. Wingate Newman. She was a woman of deep piety and was possessed of an independent spirit which fitted her for her work in life. She was an itinerant preacher's wife and with him she went about doing good, she knew the sorrows and joys of a parsonage.
    After her husband died she came back to Virginia and lived with her family friends and especially with Mrs. Martha Lightfoot, her niece, at whose home she died.
    Her sickness was brief. A fortnight before her demise she attended church and was taken sick that same day. It was to be her last sickness, she felt so, she made her preparations to depart and calmly she awaited the Master's call, which came Saturday morning the 24th inst.
    The funeral was held Sabbath morning at 9 o'clock. Rev. J. O. Kirkpatrick conducting the services. The remains were taken to Linneus, Mo., for interment, where on Monday they were laid to rest beside her husband, this being her request.

   J. S. Batis, retired hardware and implement dealer at Arenzville, died at 7:45 o'clock yesterday morning at his home in Arenzville. He was 93 years of age.
    His wife, Mollie, who is only a few years younger, has been a patient at the Passavant hospital in Jacksonville for a number of years.
    Mr. Batis was born March 4, 1858 in New Hope, Augusta county, Virginia. He was an orphan at the age of 10 and was taken into the home of Mr. Johnson who put him to work in the wheat field to tie bundles for the shockers. Mr. Johnson was operating a hand rake McCormick machine one day and accidentally ran over the 10-year-old lad, cutting off his foot.
    Mr. Batis moved to Missouri in 1869 with Mr. Johnson. He accompanied Mr. Johnson's sister on a visit to Jacksonville. When she stopped in Arcadia to visit relatives, Batis met an uncle who lived in Arenzville. He visited his uncle until fall and although he then returned to Missouri near Mr. Johnson, he moved back to Arenzville in 1874 and continued to reside there ever since.
    He first bought out the interest of Chris French in the Huss and Hierman store January 1, 1889. Two years later he bought out the interest of Mr. Hierman.
    He operated the Batis hardware and implement store for 49 years retiring in 1937 when he traded the store for the Fred Kleinschmidt farm.
    On May 26, 1891 he married Mollie Bode and they built their home on the lot adjoining her parents' home. Their present home was built in 1893.
    He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Eloise Knight of Columbus, Ohio, two grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Two children preceded him in death.
    The body is at the Williamson funeral home in Jacksonville.

Paul W. Batis, 46, Business Man of Arenzville, Dies

    Arenzville, Ill., May 28 - Paul W. Batis, 46, Arenzville hardware and implement merchant and member of the Arenzville school board, died at 11:25 a. m. today following a lingering illness.
    Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p. m. Monday at the Presbyterian church here.
    Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Nell Batis; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Batis, of Arenzville, and a sister, Mrs. Fred Knight of Pontiac, Ill.
    Deceased was born in Arenzville Sept. 25, 1895. He was a member of Post 615 of the American legion at Beardstown. He also was a member of N. D. Morse lodge, 106, A. F. & A. M., at Concord.

Alma Beard April 19, 1905 - June 12, 2003

    Alma Beard, 98, of Arenzville, died early Thursday morning, June 23, 2003, at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville.
    She was born April 19, 1905, in Clayton, the daughter of Walter E. and Jessie L. Dickens Williamson. She married Robert Lee Beard on March 11, 1925, and he preceded her in death in 1974.
    She is survived by two sons, Gerald (wife, Maxine) Beard and Myron (wife, Millie) Beard, both of Arenzville; one daughter, Karan Lynn of Glendale, AZ; nine grandchildren, Tamara (husband, Ed) Wolfenbarger and Jan (husband, Steve) Foote, both of Florida, Robert (wife, Harriet) Beard of Jacksonville, Susan (husband, Bob) Anderson of Chicago, Ginny Hamilton and Darryl (wife, June) Beard, both of Arenzville; and 12 great-grandchildren.
    She was preceded in death by one grandson, Todd; one granddaughter-in-law, Sue Beard; two great-grandchildren; and one brother, Joseph Lee Williamson.
    Mrs. Beard enjoyed gardening and visiting with her many friends and family. She, along with her husband, Robert, operated several businesses throughout the years, most notably Beard Implement Company in Arenzville. She was a revered member of the Concord Christian Church in Concord.
    Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 15, at the Concord Christian Church in Concord, with burial in Arenzville East Cemetery.
    Memorial are suggested to Concord Christian Church or Cass County Home Health Agency.

Byron L. Beard Once Arenzville Resident, Dies

    Byron L. Beard of Herculaneum, Mo., a former resident of Arenzville, died Saturday afternoon at the Lutheran hospital in St. Louis. Word was received by sisters of Mr. Beard, Mrs. Harlan Postlewait of Chapin, Mrs. Edgar Thompson and Mrs. Inez Fischer of Virginia.
    He was born in Arenzville, April 16, 1898, son of William and Rose Recamp Beard. He was an alumni of Illinois College and received his degree in mining engineering at the University of Illinois. He was a chemist at the St. Jose Lead Company in Herculaneum, Mo.
    He is survived by his wife, Blanche Treadway Beard and the following children: Mrs. Mary Jane Baxter of Arnold, Mo., William Henry Beard of Chicago, Miss Joan Beard of St. Louis, and four grandchildren.
    He was a member of the Methodist church, American Legion and active in the leadership of Boy Scouts in Herculaneum.
    Funeral services will be held at the Methodist church in Herculaneum Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. Graveside services will be held at the East cemetery in Arenzville Tuesday afternoon, between 2 and 3 p.m.

Dale Q. Beard Dies, Dies Suddenly at Home in Arenzville

    Dale Quentin Beard, 43, died suddenly at 5:30 o'clock this morning at his home in Arenzville.
    The body was taken to the Simpson Funeral Home and funeral arrangements will be announced later.
    Mr. Beard, son of William and Rose Beard, was born September 5, 1901 at Arenzville and resided in that community his entire lifetime. He attended Arenzville schools and for the past 27 years had been employed as maintenance man for the Home Telephone Company.
    On June 3, 1925 he was married to Mildred Hamm at Concord.
    He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Rose Beard, his wife and two daughters, Joyce and Gloria, at home and one brother, Byron of Herculaneum, Missouri.
    He was preceded in death by his father and one brother, James.

    Last rites for Dale Quentin Beard of Arenzville, who died suddenly at his home early yesterday morning will be held at 3 o'clock Thursday afternoon at the Simpson Funeral Home in Arenzville.
    Rev. Vanderhorst, Presbyterian minister of Woodson will conduct the services. Interment will be at the City cemetery in Arenzville.
    Mr. Beard, 43, had been employed as maintenance man for the Home Telephone Company at Arenzville for the past 27 years.

Dearld Beard - 1915-2003 - Chandlerville

   Dearld Beard, 88, of Mount Vernon, and formerly of the Chandlerville and Mason County, area and Milwaukee, died Wednesday evening, July 23, 2003 at St. Mary's Good Samaritan Hospital in Mount Vernon.
   He was born May 15, 1915 in Sangamon County. He married Velma Holmes in July 1938 in St. Louis, and she preceded in death Jan. 2, 1989.
   He is survived by a brother, Harold; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister.
   Mr. Beard served with the US Marine Corps during WW II. He was employed 40 years as a crane operator for Kerr McGee.
   Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. today at Bath Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Lintner-Buchanan Funeral Home of Chandlerville is in charge of  arrangements.

Funeral Rites Held For Mrs. Roland Beard

    Funeral services were held for Mrs. Dorothy Luella Kruse Beard at 1:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the residence and 2 o'clock in St. Peter's Lutheran church north of Arenzville with Rev. G. A. Saathoff in charge. Burial was in the Arenzville cemetery.
    Mrs. Roland Beard passed away Saturday night after a brief illness of pneumonia at Schmitt Memorial Hospital, Beardstown.
    Mrs. Beard, daughter of the late Adolph and Mayme Hoffman Kruse, was born near Arenzville, April 24, 1907. She was united in marriage to Roland Beard in May, 1938.
    Surviving are her husband, a son, Allan Neal, 8 months old, and the following sisters and brothers: Harry Kruse of this city; Mrs. Lucy Clayton, Hannibal, Mo., Mrs. Bessie Goertz, Clayton; Mrs. Nettie Corcoran, Miss Emma Kruse; Gilbert, Edgar, Byron and Harold Kruse, Beardstown.

Funeral Friday For Mrs. Beard

    Funeral services for Mrs. Elizabeth Beard were held at the Presbyterian church Friday afternoon, October 18, at 2:00.
    Elizabeth Ziegelmeier was born at Virginia on August 30, 1860, the daughter of Joseph and Caroline Ziegelmeier, and died October 14, 1957 at the home of her son, Mr. and Mrs. Franklin Beard in Fort Collins, Colo., where she had resided for the last several years. Before her marriage to William Beard, November 28, 1894 in Virginia, she taught in the Cass county public schools. During her adult life she was active in the work of the W.C.T.U. and in the affairs of her church.
    She is survived by one son, Franklin; three grandchildren, William and Mrs. Barbara Faucett of Fort Collins, Colo., and David with the U.S. Army at Fort Carson, Colo.; four great grandchildren and Mrs. Hattie Mae Hackman of Decatur, who resided with Mr. and Mrs. Beard for many of her early years.
    The Rev. E. M. McGehee officiated at the funeral services. George McDonald sang "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" and "Abide With Me", accompanied by Mrs. Otto Dour at the organ. Pallbearers were George Huffman, George Rexroat, Harley Mefford, Jesse Mefford, Harry Bailey, and Carl French. Miss Iva Lancaster was in charge of the floral offerings.

    J. Russell BEARD, 91, of Golden, a native of Cass County, died Monday morning, March 7, in Golden.
    He was born Aug. 11, 1896, in Arenzville, son of the late Lee and Lena BEARD. He married Marie MUSCH May 18, 1921, in St. Louis, Mo. She preceded him in death Feb. 4, 1978.
    He is survived by two daughters, nine grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are four sisters, Mildred KOLBERER, Mae BEETS, Lucille SCHNITKER and Rena KRUSE, all of Arenzville; and a brother, Roland BEARD of Arenzville.
    He was preceded in death by a daughter, Doris Beard SROUT, an infant son, three brothers, Raymond, Robert and John, and a sister, Helen.
    Mr. BEARD was a prominent well known business man in Golden. He owned and operated the Beard Oil Company for 40 years retiring in 1967. He was a World War I veteran serving in France and served as Commander, finance and service officer and was a charter member of the Golden Legion Post 801. In 1971 he received a 50 year pin and life membership in the post.
    He was a member of 40/8 Voiture No. 255 in Quincy, the Veterans of WW 1 in Augusta, the Golden Methodist Church and served on the board of directors of Good Shepherd Home for 21 years and the Golden Village Board for six years.
    Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at the Golden Methodist Church. Interment will be in Arenzville East Cemetery. Visitation will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Briggs Funeral Home in Golden. Memorials are suggested to the Good Shepherd Home in Golden or the Golden Methodist Church.

Mrs. Julia Beard Dies At Wichita, Remains Will Arrive Here Friday; Funeral Will Be at Concord

    Mrs. Julia Beard, widow of the late Ed. E. Beard, a former Concord resident, died Wednesday at her home in Wichita, Kansas.
    The remains will arrive in Jacksonville Friday morning and will be taken to the Williamson Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Concord Methodist church, with burial in Arenzville cemetery.

Lee Beard, 89, of Arenzville Dies

    Lee Beard, 89, of Arenzville, well known throughout the community, died at his home in Arenzville at 8:30 o'clock last night after a short illness. He was the last of 13 children.
    Mr. Beard was a native of the Arenzville community. He was a farmer in that area before moving into the town of Arenzville in 1945.
    He was born near Arenzville on September 25, 1864, a son of John and Mary Ann Batis Beard. On October 22, 1895 he was united in marriage to Lena Elizabeth Kircher.
    Survivors include his wife; the following children, Russel of Golden, John of Jacksonville, Raymond, Robert, Roland, Mrs. Mildred Kolberer, Mrs. Mae Beets, Mrs. Lucille Schnitker and Mrs. Rena Kruse, all of Arenzville; 28 grand-children and 11 great-grandchildren.
    One daughter, Helen Marguerite, died in 1920.
    The body was taken to the Williamson Funeral Home in Jacksonville and was returned to the residence in Arenzville this afternoon.
    Funeral services will be held at the family home in Arenzville at 2:30 o'clock Friday afternoon. Interment will be in the Arenzville cemetery.

    Mrs. Lena BEARD, lifelong resident of Arenzville, died late Tuesday night at her home. She was the wife of the late Lee BEARD of Arenzville.
    Mrs. BEARD was born near Arenzville July 21, 1872, the daughter of John and Elizabeth RAHN KIRCHER. She was the last of a family of 12 children, five brothers and six sisters preceding her in death. On Oct. 22, 1895 she was united in marriage with Mr. BEARD and he preceded her in death Oct. 6, 1953.
    She is survived by nine children, Russell of Golden; Mrs. Mildred KOLBERER, Mrs. Mae BEETS, Mrs. Lucille SCHNITKER, Mrs. Harold KRUSE, Raymond BEARD, Robert L. BEARD, and Roland BEARD all of Arenzville and John BEARD of Jacksonville. There are 30 grandchildren and 14 great, grandchildren. One daughter, Helen Marguerite, preceded her mother in death in 1920.
    The body will be taken from the Williamson funeral home at 4 p.m. Wednesday to the residence in Arenzville where services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Friday with Rev. C. Frank JANSSEN, pastor of the Northminster Presbyterian church in Jacksonville, officiating. Burial will be made in the Arenzville cemetery.

Former Arenzville Postmaster Mrs. Rose S. Beard, Dies at 69, Funeral Services Will Be Held at 2 O'clock at Arenzville

    Funeral services will be conducted at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the Presbyterian church in Arenzville for Mrs. Rose S. Beard, postmaster at Arenzville for 25 years and a member of a pioneer Cass county family.
    Mrs. Beard, who would have been 70 years of age had she lived until August 20, died at 5 p.m. Saturday at her home. Cerebral hemorrhage was given as the cause of her death.
    The Rev. C. Frank Ganssen, pastor of the church, will officiate at the services, and the burial will be at the Arenzville city cemetery.
    Mrs. Beard was born in Arenzville August 20, 1878 and was united in marriage in 1896 in Arenzville to William Henry Beard, who preceded her in death. She was the mother of three children, Byron of Herculaneum, Mo., surviving with five grandchildren. Her sons, Dale and Marvin also preceded her in death as did her parents, a brother and three sisters.
    She was very active in all civic affairs at Arenzville for many years.
    The body was removed from the Simpson Funeral Home to the late residence in Arenzville yesterday.

   Mrs. Susan Bears, whose maiden name was Susan Locey, was born in Catskill, N.Y., July 9^th, 1805 died of old age, at the residence of her daughter Mrs. M. C. Little, in Chandlerville, on Tuesday, December 22, 1891, at 3:30 a.m., at the age of 86 years, 5 months and 13 days.
   She was married to David Kinnan, in Tompkins county, New York, in 1820, to which there were four daughters born to bless their union, two of which survive her, namely Mrs. Catherine Little and Mrs. Matilda Curry, both of this city, Mr. Kinnan died September 26^th, 1846. She was afterwards married to Jabez Bears in New York state, in 1850. Mr. Bears died a short time after marriage, leaving her again a widow. She moved to Illinois with her two surviving daughters in 1853, and had resided with her daughter Mrs. M. C. Little, up to the time of her death. In early life she became a member of the Christian church and lived a consistent christian up to her death.
   She leaves two daughters, a number of other relatives and many warm friends who mourn her demise.
   The funeral services were held in the Christian church, in this city at 2 o’clock p.m., on Wednesday, December 23, 1891, Rev. W. A. McKinney officiating; after which the remains were laid at rest in the village cemetery.

Lorna "Allene" Becker - 1917-2003 - Beardstown

   Lorna "Allene" Becker, 86, of Beardstown, died early Monday morning, July 28, 2003, at her residence.
   She was born July 7, 1917, in Browning, the daughter of James Whitcomb and Vera Hollenback Reiley. She married Milton O. Becker and he preceded her in death in 1969.
   She is survived by two daughters, Kathleen (husband, Allan) Allar of Beardstown and Barbara Kidder Fox of Rochester, Ind.; one son, Hayes B. of Macomb; six grandchildren, Brien Leslie of Portland, Ore., Karl Kidder of LaMirada, Calif., Jason Kidder, Barrett Kidder, Keith Kidder and Kenny Kidder, all of Rochester, Ind.; three great-grandchildren; one brother Orrin Reiley of Buellton, Calif.; and two sisters, Metta (husband, Harold "Bud") Landes of Beardstown and Jeanette Haig of Magnolia. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Holly Swanson; and six brothers, Jack, James, Jiles, Gene, Jerry and Kenneth Reiley.
   Mrs. Becker attended Browning Grade School and in 1931 her family moved to California. She graduated from Fairfax High School in Los Angeles in 1934. After the death of her husband she returned to school in Los Altos, Calif., received her degree as a licensed Vocational Nurse, and was employed as a charge nurse at a nursing home in California for 10 years. In 1979 she moved back to Illinois where she owned and operated "Second Hand Rose," an antique shop in Beardstown with her sister Metta Landes. She loved to dance and was nicknamed "Jitterbug Queen." She had a collection of over 300 teddy bears and she always enjoyed collecting, buying, and selling antiques.
   Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at the Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown, with burial at Browning Cemetery. The family will meet with friends from 9 a.m. until the time of the funeral service Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials have been suggested to the Arthritis Foundation.

Arthur E. Beddoes dies

    Rev. Arthur E. Beddoes, who was pastor of the First Congregational church here for we years, died at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Crook, near Joliet. Funeral services were held at the Son?????? funeral Home in Joliet.
   Mr. Beddoes made his home with Mr. and Mrs. Crook. Mrs. Crook was a sister of Mrs. Beddoes.
   Rev. and Mrs. Beddoes moved to this city about 12 years ago from Rushville where he continued ministry work.
   Beddoes was active in the Beardstown Rotary club. He is survived by a daughter, Jean.

    Funeral services for Mrs. Edith Beddoes will be held at 10 o'clock Monday morning at Cline's funeral home. The Rev. Harrold Farrell, pastor of the Presbyterian church of Rushville will conduct the services.
    Burial will be in Chapman cemetery at Morris, Ill.
    Edith Mae Noble Beddoes was born in Covington township, New York, November 26, 1867, the daughter of James S. and Jane R. Noble.
    She was educated in Wheaton college, Wheaton, Ill.
    She was united in marriage to Arthur E. Beddoes, April 20, 1897 in Evanston, Ill.
    He was pastor of the Congregational church here 18 years before his retirement several years ago, then moved to Rushville.
    Besides her husband, she is survived by one duaghter, Mrs. Robert C. Adams, a grandson, Robert C. Adams, Jr. and a sister Mrs. George L. Crook of Minooka, Ill.
    She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother Walter R. Noble.

   James Lee Bell, 67, of Virginia, died Tuesday morning, August 8, 2006 at his residence of Lou Gehrig's disease.
   He was born July 14, 1939, in Cass County, the son of Albert Elmer and Cora Evelyn Logan Bell. He married Janet Murphy on Nov. 10, 1963, in Virginia, and she survives.
   He is also survived by two daughters, Judene Stock (husband, Rich) of Virginia and Jennifer Johnson (husband, Dwayne) of Jerseyville; two grandchildren, Jill Stock and Jimmy Stock; seven brothers, Lyle of Beardstown, Bud (wife, Patsy), Dale (wife, Ruby), Jerry (wife, Mary), Frank Bell (wife, Barb), Donnie Bell (wife, Trish), David, all of Virginia; three sisters, Betty (husband, Charley) McClure and Lucille Bell, both of Virginia, Gloria (husband, Dennis) Sweatman of Springfield; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother, Junior and one sister, Josephine Harris.
   Mr. Bell was a farmer in the Cass County area. He attended the Virginia United Methodist Church, was a member of the Cass-Morgan County Farm Bureau and Virginia Gun Club. He was a loyal Democrat and member of the Cass County Assessment Board.
   Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m.Thursday at the Virginia United Methodist Church, with burial in the Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia. The family will greet friends from 5-8 p.m.  today at the church. Memorial gifts are suggested to Cass-Schuyler Hospice or Virginia United Methodist Church Youth Program.    Mary Jane Bell, 74 years, of Virginia, IL died Wednesday morning, January 11, 2005 at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville, IL.
   She was born January 6, 1932 in Literberry, IL; the daughter of George Oliver and Salma Gertrude McFarland Decker. She married Robert L. Bell on December 30, 1961 in Literberry, IL and he preceded in death on September 14, 1984.
   She is survived by two daughters, Dianne Darland (husband, Michael) of Virginia and Barbara Gregory (husband, David) of Lynnville; a brother, Albert Decker (wife, Ruth) of Creve Coeur; two sisters, Clarice Mason of Pekin and Mildred Tucker of Jacksonville; and several nieces and nephews.
   She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Lee Decker, Raymond Decker, and John Decker (surviving wife, Nora of Literberry); and four sisters, Alice Willis Boston, Ruth Decker, June Anders, and Opal Tucker (surviving husband, James of Literberry).
   Mrs. Bell was a 1950 graduate of Virginia High School and a homemaker. She attended Lynnville Christian Church and volunteered at Passavant Area Hospital.
   Funeral services will be held 10:00 AM Saturday, January 14, 2006 at the Massie-Buchanan Funeral Home in Virginia with burial at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia.

Henry Berger and Junior Drinkwater Are Victims, Third Man Also Dead in Collision of Two Trucks Near Granite City on Highway 111

    Three men, including Henry Berger, 50, and Ernest Junior Drinkwater, 21, both of Beardstown, were killed early today in a head-on collision between two-livestock trucks on state route 111 near Roxana between Granite City and Wood River.
    Raymond L. Frank, 26, of New Berlin was the other victim in the crash.
    Frank's truck which was empty and which was being driven north, collided head-on with a stock truck loaded with cattle driven by Berger and also occupied by Drinkwater, shortly after midnight half mile south of the Canal Bridge on route 111.
    Leonard E. Simpson of Pleasant Plains who was asleep in Frank's truck, was reported unhurt although both trucks were overturned.
    The bodies were taken to Mercer's Mortuary in Granite City where an inquest was scheduled for 8 p.m.
    Mr. Berger, a widely known stock raiser who resided about 4 miles south of here on state highway 100 near the Edgewood school, and young Drinkwater left here last night with the load of cattle, bound for market.
    Drinkwater had supper with his mother, Lizzie Drinkwater, 309 1/2 East Sixth street and told her that he was going to go to market with Mr. Berger. The young man made his home with his grandmother, Mrs. Mary Drinkwater, who lives south of Beardstown.
    Members of the Berger family said today that Mr. Berger and a companion, left the Berger farm between 7 and 8 o'clock last night with a load of seven cattle in a 1936 International truck in which Mr. Berger had made a trip to St. Louis with other stock the previous night.
    They said that Mr. Berger had previously driven the Alton route to St. Louis, and they were surprised to learn of him traveling through Granite City on last night's trip.
    Henry Frederick Berger, stockman and farmer, was born April 15, 1897 at the homestead four miles south of Beardstown on route 100 which was his home all his life. He was commissioner of the Valley Drainage District, and with his brother and sister, farmed 1600 acres in the South Beardstown and Valley districts.
    His father, David Berger, died 19 years ago, and his mother died six years ago.
    Surviving are his brother, Edward Berger, and sister, Mary Berger, both at home.
    Young Drinkwater was born at Virginia May 10, 1926 and attended Waggoner Bridge school. He was employed as a farm laborer and lived 9 1/2 miles south of Beardstown with his grandmother, his great uncle Ed Bolejack and an aunt Sarah Drinkwater. They survive with the mother, and the following aunts and uncles: Charles Walter, Edward and Frank Drinkwater, Mrs. Lydia Harris, Mrs. Rachel Burnett and Mrs. Ollie Williams.
    The bodies of the two men will be brought to the Cline Funeral Home here.

John A. Beutin - 1918-2003 - Beardstown

   John A. Beutin, 85, of Beardstown, died Sunday evening, June 22, 2003, at his residence.
   He was born May 19, 1918, in Chicago, the son of Peter and Laura Deitrich Beutin. He married Margaret McMurl Oct. 23, 1971, in Beardstown, and she survives.
   He is also survived by two stepsons, Benji (wife, Millie) Goldsmith of Bushnell and Ken (wife, Lynette) Goldsmith of Beardstown; one stepdaughter, Anna (husband, Larry) Murk of St. Augustine; nine step-grandchildren; 13 step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one stepdaughter, Ruth Sipes; one step-granddaughter; Wendy Sue Sipes; and three brothers, Robert, Richard and William.
   Mr. Beutin attended school in Chicago. He attended First Christian Church in Beardstown and was a member of the American Legion Post in Rushville and a former member of the Moose Lodge in Beardstown. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from April 24, 1942 until December 7, 1945, with the 77th Division in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. He was awarded the Bronze Star for his military service and he also received the Good Conduct Medal and the Bronze Service Arrowhead. Mr. Beutin was previously employed with a vacuum cleaner parts distributor in Chicago for over 30 years. After moving to Beardstown he was employed with Hults Electric and then later with the Beardstown City Clerk's office for 11 years. He also owned and operated Vacuum Cleaner Repair in Beardstown for 30 years.
   Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown, with burial at Beardstown City Cemetery. Friends may call after 4 p.m. today at the funeral home, with the family meeting friends from 5-7 p.m. Memorials have been suggested to Cass/Schuyler Area Hospice or First Christian Church in Beardstown.

Services Held At Church For H. H. Biddlecome, Lifelong Resident Of County Passes Away Sat.

    Funeral services for Horace H. Biddlecome, who passed away at his home Saturday morning after an illness of several years, were held Monday at 2:00 o'clock at the Presbyterian church with the Rev. T. C. Burton officiating. Mrs. Otto Dour played "Abide With Me" and other numbers. Burial was in Walnut Ridge cemetery.
    Casket bearers were Bert Way, George Rexroat, Jr., C. R. Wilson, E. C. Mills, F. D. Savage and J. S. Haywood.
    Mrs. Steve Treadway and Miss Iva Lancaster arranged the flowers.
    Mr. Biddlecome was born in Cass county July 17, 1866, the son of Daniel and Amanda Moore Biddelcome. He was married to Miss Laura Davis who survives, together with four daughters, Mrs. George Widmayer of this city, Mrs. Harry Todd, of Coronado, California, Mrs. Loring Coleman of Chicago and Mrs. V. C. Kuhlman of Downers Grove. Also surviving are six grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and one brother Edward of this city.
    Mr. Biddlecome was a retired railroad engineer, and he had been in ill health for many years.

 Thomas Edward "Ed" Bierhaus, 53, of rural Virginia died at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22, 1992, at St. John's Hospital in Springfield.

   He was born Sept. 12, 1938, in Beardstown, the son of Earl Edward and Mildred Lucille Cox Bierhaus. He married Juanita Butler on Dec. 31, 1985, at Shiloh Cumberland Presbyterian Church in rural Virginia.
   He is survived by his wife; two stepsons, Dale "Lou" Smith of Menard and Darrell Smith of Virginia; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Dale (Paula) Kotalik of Tabor, S.D., and Beatrice Holland of Virginia; four stepgrandchildren; one brother, Milton Richard Bierhaus of Virginia; one niece; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, one aunt and one uncle.
   He had been employed for 30 years at Cass Veterinary Services in Virginia. He was a member and elder of Shiloh Cumberland Presbyterian Church, where he was a former secretary and treasurer of the Sunday School and currently a member of the Finance Committee and Men's Fellowship. He served as a trustee of the Union Neighbors Community Club.
   Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Massie-Buchanan Funeral Home in Virginia with the Rev. Albert Smith officiating. Organist was Mrs. June Smith. Burial was in Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia. Pallbearers were Darrell Smith, Dale Kotalik, Dr.Alan Wildt, Glen Goodin, Nathan Cox and Mike Clement.
   Memorials may be made to the Cass County Fair Association.

    Mrs. E.C. BIGGERS, who is undoubtedly the oldest lady in the city, if not in the county, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. M.A. NEISS, at 9:45 o'clock Saturday evening, where she has been making her home for the past six years.
    Mrs. BIGGERS was born in Glasgow, Scotland, July 22, 1806.  When she was five years of age she came to this country and lived in Pennsylvania until she was married to Isaac BORDEN.  Ten children were born to this union of which six children are now living.  Mrs. Mary NEISS of this city, C.W. BORDEN of Olympia, Wash; S.P. BORDEN of Pittsburgh, PA., Mrs. Minnie HUNTSMAn of Albuquerque, N.M., and E.G. BORDEN of this city.
    In 1852 her husband died and in 1862 she was again united in marriage to Samuel BIGGARS of Meadville, Pa.  In 1874 Mr. BIGGARS passed away and since that time she has been making her home first with one of her children, then with another, until in 1901, when she came to this city to make her home with her daughter, Mrs. Mary NEISS, and where she lived until her death.  In her early life she joined the Presbyterian church and until the past few years, when she was unable to attend, she was an active member. She counted her acquaintances many distinguished people, being a warm, personal friend of President and Mrs. McKINLEY and President BUCHANAN.  Her mind up until the end was remarkably clear and bright, and had many friends who loved to have her tell them of her many experiences.  The funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock, from the residence of F.C. and R.D. Neiss, at the corner of Fourteenth and Monroe streets.  Rev T. CLARK officiated.

    W. G. BINGHAM, widely known resident of this community and a veteran Chicago, Burlington and Quincy railroad dispatcher, died at 7:20 this morning at his home after an illness of a month. The body was taken to the Cline Funeral Home to be prepared for burial.
    William Gregory BINGHAM was born July 16, 1878 at Table Grove, IL. the son of Joseph and Ann BINGHAM, both of whom preceded him in death. He was united in marriage to Myra SOULE at Youngstown, IL. on March 29, 1903 and they moved to Beardstown 32 years ago. They were the parents of six children all of whom survive the decedent They are Mrs. R. E. TAYLOR, Mrs. Albert LODEGSDON, Frana; William GREGORY and Anna Louise, all of this city and Edwin of Montgomery, AL. The wife, a sister, Mrs. Ed WATERS of Table Grove and a brother, G. E. BINGHAM of Newport, IN. also survive with ten grandchildren.
    On January 15, 1899, Mr. BINGHAM started his railroad career as a telegraph operator for the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy railroad. He was promoted to the position of dispatcher October 17, 1910 and held the post until his illness a month ago. Mr. BINGHAM was a member of the Woodman lodge; the Q Veteran's Association and the Christian church. Funeral services were held Sunday at the First Methodist church. In closing the pastor read this verse. I know not where his islands lift. Their frended palms in air I only know I cannot drift. Beyond His love and care.

From Table Grove Marietta Feb. 12 1931 Comes Thursday. The afternoon train pulls in, carrying a passenger who has won my admiration. His boyhood was spent in our town. He left us years ago to do work which I am told he has become an expert. Alighting from the train, he dose not tarry at the station where his first schooling in telegraphy was received. And as he passes thru town he dose not linger in the stores where a few of the older merchants still hold forth. He goes at once to the little brown cottage on the hill. This place is to him "home sweet home". It is the scene of rollicking and dreaming boy day experiences. But it is "home sweet home' the more because the aged eyes of Mother still look down the old pathway to see the coming of her boy. When Thursday comes! When Thursday comes, the visitor to our town has a day off from his week of labor. There are many things of interest and profit he could do on this day. But a lifelong habit seems to have its way. And this lifelong habit is that of never failing thoughtfulness for his mother. So it is natural that other interests and pleasures he put aside that this faithful workman travel back to the little cottage on this day to laugh and chat a few hours with his mother. It is long years since the barefoot boy ran in and out. This must always carry a passing loneliness to a mother who looks back through the misty years. In this instance the years have been sweetened because her boy still goes and comes. Thursday one day among the best for Mother. Then loneliness is broken for a time; and through the week there is a looking forward. Letters are always good, but the mother and returned son companioning again about the comfortable stove is better. And thrice blest is this mother with three children of equal thoughtfulness. And so on Thursday an efficient train dispatcher from Beardstown comes to our town on his day of rest. I do not see him often. It is enough that the one in this town who loves him most dose see him. When Thursday comes, I think of Gregg BINGHAM and his mother who looks for him.

Miss Mary Bins Dies

    Miss Mary T. Bins, 72, died at 9:30 o'clock last night at Schmitt Memorial hospital, where she had been a patient the past four days.
    The body was taken to the Simpson Funeral Home to be prepared for burial and will be taken to the home of Mrs. John Carls tomorrow afternoon.
    Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at the Carls home and at 2 o'clock at the Bluff Springs Methodist church. Rev. J. D. Reed will conduct the services. Interment will be in the family lot at the Jokisch cemetery.
    Mary Therese Bins, daughter of Lewis and Caroline Bins, was born at Camp Point, Illinois May 4, 1876 and was 72 years, 11 months and 11 days of age at the time of her death.
    For the past several years she made her home with her sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. John Carls, eight miles east of Beardstown.
    She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. John Carls of Beardstown and Mrs. Charles Newbern of Arenzville, and one brother, William Bins, or rural route two, Virginia.

Services Held for Miss Bins

    Funeral services for Miss Mary T. Bins, 72, who died Friday night at Schmitt Memorial hospital, were held at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon at the First Methodist church, Bluff Springs. Prayer service was held at 1:30 o'clock at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Carls.
    The Rev. J. D. Reed, pastor of the Bluff Springs Methodist church, conducted the services. "Home of the Soul" and "What a Friend We Have In Jesus" were sung by Mrs. Audrey Carls, accompanied at the organ by Hazel Chambers.
    Pallbearers were Clifford Miller, Lewis Newburn, Donald Bins, Gilbert Launer, Edward Jones and Walter Peck. Flowers were arranged by Mrs. Clifford Miller, Mrs. Lewis Newburn, Mrs. Gilbert Launer, Mrs. Edward Jones, Mrs. Walter Peck and Mrs. Arthur Miller.
    Interment was in the family lot at the Jokisch cemetery.

Cass Veteran Teacher Dies At Virginia

    Funeral services for Miss Rebecca Bell Black, lifetime resident of Virginia who passed away at 11:30 p.m. Thursday at Passavant hospital in Jacksonville after an illness of several weeks, will be held at the Virginia Christian church at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
    Miss Black was a teacher in the Cass County public schools for many years.
    She was the daughter of the late John and Margaret Blair Black and is survived by one sister, Mrs. Henry Purse of Savannah, Ga. Also surviving are two nephews, John Henry Purse of South Charleston, W. Va., and William D. Chapman of San Diego, Calif., four nieces, Mrs. Elizabeth Trent of Ashland, Mrs. Earl Smith of Chapin, Mrs. Earl Myers of Jacksonville and Mrs. Andrew L. Fox of Virginia.
    Friends may call at the Massie Funeral home in Virginia this evening from 7 to 9 p.m.
    Interment will be in Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia.

Mary Christine Blair - 1928-2003 - Ashland

   Mary Christine Blair, 75 years, of Ashland, went to her new heavenly home to spend eternity with Jesus Christ on Sunday afternoon, Aug. 31, 2003 at her residence after an extended illness.
   She was born June 17, 1928 in Schuyler County, the daughter of Lewis Clement and Lela Lurene Shaver Milby. She married Billy E. Blair, Sr. on March 18, 1950 in Canton, and he survives.
   She is also survived by two sons, Billy E. "J.R." Jr. (wife, Kathie) of Ashland and Kenneth L. of Dallas; one grandson, Adam B. (wife, Jennifer)  Blair of Ashland; three brothers, Merle (wife, Peggy) Milby of Vermont, Harold (wife, Charlotte) Milby of Beardstown, and Leslie (wife, Judy) Milby of Macomb; five sisters, Faye Avery of Rushville, Florence (husband, Francis) Edwards of Petersburg, Rosalie Fahnders of Pekin, Ramona (husband, Virgil) Henderson of Macomb, and Joyce (husband, Richard) Goodwin of Pekin; and several nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by a brother, Morris Milby (surviving wife, Frances Milby Smith of Rushville).
   Mrs. Blair was a 50 year resident of Cass County. She was a Christian, a homemaker, and a farm wife. A devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, she was a member of the Ashland Church of Christ where she taught Sunday School for many years and worked with the Kids for Christ Youth Group.
   Services celebrating Christine's life will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church in Ashland with burial in Ashland Cemetery. Friends may call after 4 p.m. Wednesday at the church where the family will meet friends from 5-7 p.m. Memorials are suggested to Cass-Schuyler Area Hospice, Village of Ashland-Park Fund, or SIU Alzheimer's Center. Mrs. Pearl Bley Dies Suddenly at Her Home Here

    Mrs. Pearl B. Bley, widow of Dr. Walter C. Bley, died suddenly of a heart attack at 8:30 o'clock this morning at her home, 915 State street.
    She had not complained of feeling ill and was apparently in good health yesterday when she and her son went to Virginia on business. The heart attack was sudden this morning and her death occurred about 8:30 o'clock.
    Mrs. Bley had resided in Beardstown ever since her marriage. She was a native of Cass county and a member of one of Virginia's most prominent families.
    A former extensive land owner in Cass county, she had traveled a great deal. In 1930 she and her husband and son, Bill, toured Europe. In 1931 and again in 1937 Mrs. Bley and her son took round-the-world trips.
    Born in Virginia, Pearl McDonald Barkley Bley was the daughter of William and N.C. Barkley.
    She graduated from Virginia high school and attended Women's college in Jacksonville, which is now known as MacMurray College.
    She was married to Dr. Walter C. Bley of Beardstown and they resided in this city the entire time.
    Dr. Bley's death occurred in 1931. He was for many years, president of the Beardstown board of education and took an active part in civic affairs.
    Mrs. Bley's only survivor is her son, George Barkley (Bill) Bley, 917 State street.
    Mrs. Bley was a member of the Methodist church in Beardstown and also in Virginia. She was a member of the Beardstown Woman's club and the Business and Professional Woman's club. She was a former member of the Choral club here.
    For approximately 20 years she served as director of the Petefish-Skiles and company bank in Virginia. She retired as director only last year, when her son took over as one of the directors.
    The body was taken to Cline's Funeral Home and will be returned tomorrow to her son's home, 917 State street. Complete funeral arrangements will be announced later. Interment will be in the Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia where both of Mrs. Bley's parents are buried.

Blum Rites Tomorrow, Cass Farmer Passes Away in Hospital

    Funeral services are to be held tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at the Fourth Street Lutheran church with Rev. K. E. Irvin in charge for G. E. (Elmer) Blum, prominent Cass county farmer and former resident of this city, who died of a heart ailment at 6:22 o'clock Saturday night in Schmitt Memorial hospital.
    Mr. Blum well known here and a resident on a farm a mile east of Bluff Springs, has been a hospital patient about two weeks.
    The body was taken to the Cline Funeral Home to be prepared for burial.
    Born Near Bluff Springs
    The decedent was born near Bluff Springs and his 45th birthday anniversary occurred Jan. 16. He was the son of George Blum, and the late Mrs. George Blum.
    Surviving the decedent are his wife, two children, Orville and Freda both at home; his father, George Blum of this city; three brothers, Loren and Clarence of Beardstown and Lloyd of Waukegan, and a sister Mrs. Alex Schall of Warrior neighborhood.
    His mother died June 2 of last year. He was also preceded by a brother, Harry.
    The body has been taken to the Geo. Blum residence at 510 West Tenth street.

Ruth A. Boehs 1918 - 2001 Chapin

    Ruth Almyra Boehs, 83, of rural Chapin, died Tuesday morning, Nov. 6, 2001, at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville.
   She was born May 28, 1918, in Cass County, the daughter of John Edward and Louie Crowell Oleson.  She married Gerhardt J. "Gary" Boehs April 24, 1949, in Beardstown, and he survives.
    She is also survived by one son, Dennis (wife, Linda) of Chapin; one daughter, Sandy (husband, John) Flynn of Peoria; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by three brothers, Albert Oleson, Thomas Oleson and Russell Oleson; and two sisters, Grace Oleson and Margaret Matthews.
    Mrs. Boehs was a homemaker and an active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church near Chapin and the Mary Martha Circle.
    Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, with burial at Grace Cemetery.  Friends may call after 2 p.m. today at the Williamson Funeral Home, where the family will meet friends 6-8 p.m.  Memorials are suggested to St. Paul's Lutheran Church.

    Funeral services for Henry Blum, 87, native of Cass county who died here Sunday, were held at 2:30 o'clock yesterday at the Simpson Home for Services with the Rev. R. E. Aden, pastor of the St. John's Lutheran church of Bluff Springs, officiating.

Margie M. Bohlmann 1938-2002
    Margie M. Bohlmann, 64, of Beardstown, died Wednesday morning, Nov. 21, 2002, at Doctor's Hospital in Springfield.
    She was born May 19, 1938, in Watseka, the daughter of Charles "Tobe" and V. Pearl Rader Smith. She married Willard K. Bohlmann July 26, 1959, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Woodworth, and he survives in Beardstown.
    She is also survived by two daughters, Valerie (husband, Mike) Chambers of Bluff Springs and Teresa (husband, Mark) Russell of Springfield; three grandchildren; and one sister, Yvonne Wilson of Danville. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Billy Smith and Frank Bigger; and one sister, Nina Louise, in infancy.
    Mrs. Bohlmann graduated from Milford Township High School in the class of 1956. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church. She
formerly served as a "Pink Lady" at Schmidt Memorial Hospital in Beardstown and was formerly active on a Monday Night Bowling League
in Beardstown where she also served as secretary. Mrs. Bohlmann previously served as secretary for St. John's Lutheran Church and School in Beardstown for seven years and she was also formerly employed at the Clothes Connection in Beardstown. She thoroughly enjoyed playing bridge and was very active in two bridge clubs in Beardstown.
    Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Beardstown, with burial at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery near Beardstown. Friends may call after 4 p.m. Friday at the Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown with the family meeting friends from 6-8 p.m. The remains will also be taken to the church one hour prior to the services Saturday. Yvonne M. Boice - 1941-2003 - Beardstown

    Yvonne M. Boice, 61, of Beardstown, died Friday afternoon, April 25, 2003, at Culbertson Memorial Hospital in Rushville.
    She was born May 30, 1941, in rural Beardstown, the daughter of Clyde C. and Christine Elizabeth Hendricker Jockisch. She married John "Bob" Boice Nov. 2, 1969, at the First Southern Baptist Church in Beardstown and he survives in Beardstown.
    She is also survived by one daughter, Madeline (husband, Jack) Hefley of Beardstown; one son, Jonathan Boice of Beardstown; one granddaughter, Hope Nicole Hefley of Beardstown; one step-grandson, Jack Michael of Bluffs; three sisters, Sharon, (husband, Jerry) Boice
of Beardstown, Joanne (husband, Larry) Piluski, of Rushville, and Janet (husband, Bob) Lauderback of Beardstown; and several nieces and
nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.
    Mrs. Boice graduated from Beardstown High School in the class of 1959 and from Brown's Business College in Springfield in 1959. She was a member of First Southern Baptist Church in Beardstown for over 38 years where she spent many years serving as the church organist and pianist. Mrs. Boice was previously employed with the State of Illinois Department of Children and Family Services in Springfield and the Jacksonville State Hospital. One of her greatest pleasures was shopping in Atlanta, Ga., but her truest joy came in loving her family and especially spending time with her granddaughter.
    Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at the First Southern Baptist Church in Beardstown with burial at Beardstown City Cemetery.
Family will meet friends from 5-7 p.m. Sunday at Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown. Her remains will lie in state one hour prior to services Monday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the Prairie Heart Institute.

E.R. "Daddy" Borden, Who Became Famous Because of His Daring Ride to Saint Louis During "Q" Strike, Succumbs after Long Illness:

    E.R. "Daddy" Borden famous in Beardstown because of his bravery during the Burlington strike about thirty years ago when he was an active engineer, died at his home, 401 West Eighth Street at 11:40 o'clock Saturday night.   Death followed a lingering illness of several months duration.  Deceased was 71 years 5 months and 13 days old.
    Borden, probably one of the best known engineers on the Burlington displayed his fearlessness one day when the "Q" strike was at its height, when he took his engine from the local shops and run the gauntlet of union pickets between here and St. Louis.  As he pulled into the terminal station a shower of bullets battered his engine tender but Borden went through without a scratch.  During the strike he refused to go out and remained at his post a non-union engine man.

    Deceased was born in New York state January 24, 1844, and when 18 years old joined the Confederate army under Col. Starns in the Seventh Tennessee mounted infantry.  After the close of the civil war he was married in 1869 to Miss Lida Francis Shrout, in Butler County, Mo. where they resided until 1888 when they moved to Beardstown.  Mr. Borden had since been a resident of this city and was familiarly known as "Dad".
    While Mr. Borden at the time of the famous Burlington strike remained on the railroads side and refused to go on strike, he had been friendly to the railroad union organization in later years.  He was of congenial disposition and a friend of every man who knew him.
    Surviving are the following children:  G.A. Borden, Davenport, IA: Mrs. L.B. Mathews, Alabama; Mrs. Guy T. Rife, Rock Springs, Wyo; and Mrs. Stanley T. Scarcliff who has been at her father's during his recent illness.
    Funeral services will be held at 4 o'clock tomorrow afternoon from the residence.  Rev ?. W. Morton, pastor of the Central Christian Church officiating.   Burial will be made in the city cemetery.

Mrs. John Bottens Of Cass Co. Dies; Service Tuesday

    A Cass county woman, Mrs. Grace Bottens, wife of John E. Bottens, Beardstown rural route, died at the Schmitt hospital in Beardstown at 1:45 Sunday afternoon where she had been a patient for the past three weeks.
    Mrs. Bottens was born in Hancock County Aug. 30, 1885, the daughter of John and Kathlyn Schlegle Curran. She was married to Mr. Bottens in 1909 and he survives with three sons, Wilbur of Beardstown; Keith and Kanton, both of Chandlerville. There are six grandchildren.
    The deceased was a member of the Christian church at Virginia and of the Krohe Friendly Circle club in Cass County.
    The body was taken to the Cline funeral home at Beardstown.
    Funeral services will be held at the funeral home at 2:30 Tuesday with Rev. Virgil Fox in charge. Burial will be made in the Cline perpetual care cemetery at Beardstown.

    Funeral services were held at 2:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon at the Cline Funeral home for Mrs. Grace Bottens, who died at 12:45 p.m. Sunday at the Schmitt Memorial Hospital.
    C. Virgil Fox, minister of the First Christian church officiated at the services.
    Miss Celia Ann Greenwood and Miss Rebecca Black of Virginia sang, "Will There Be Any Stars in My Crown" and "In the Garden." They were accompanied at the organ by William Huffman.
    The flowers were arranged by Mrs. George Huffman. Mrs. Henry Hendricker, Mrs. Ed Brockhouse, Mrs. Ida Stock, Mrs. Della Tucker, and Mrs. Wayne Baxter.
    Pallbearers were Art. J. Ruppel, George Huffman, James Fischer, Irvin Hendricker, Marcus Tucker and Vernon Noblett.
    Burial was made in the Cline Perpetual care section of the city cemetery.

Services Held For Mrs. Bowman Here Thursday, Pioneer Resident Dies Tues.; Was Nearly Eighty-Five

    Mrs. Emma Bowman, 84, passed away Tuesday afternoon at a Jacksonville hospital after a several months illness. She was born Jan. 9, 1862, near Rolla, Missouri, the daughter of David and Elizabeth Boatman. She was the widow of William Bowman, who preceded her in death 26 years ago.
    She spent most of her life in this community and was a member of the Methodist church for more than 60 years. She has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Howard Jokisch, for some time before entering the hospital.
    Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Jokisch of this city and Mrs. Ed Millner of Fresno, Calif.; two sons, Harry of Chicago, W. L. of Rock Island and a twin sister, Mrs. Ella Matthew of this city, nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
    Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at the Jokisch home, with Rev. H. F. Higgins of the Methodist church officiating.
    Casket bearers were Dr. G. W. Smith, Robert Jokisch, Crum Sinclair of this city, Albert Pratt, Springfield, Gene Millner, Joliet and George Henderson, Tallula.
    Interment was in Walnut Ridge cemetery.

BRAINERD - Henry Harrison Brainerd was born on September 27, 1872, at Beardstown, Illinois, and died October 24, at the hospital at Mountain View, Missouri. In 1893 he married Rosina Bond. Twelve children were born, five sons and seven daughters. He was baptized and confirmed a member of the Reorganized Church at Beardstown on on November 20, 1903, by Elder M. R. Shoemaker. The family lived in Independence, Missouri, eighteen years; while they were living on the Spring Brandch road, the Spring Branch congregation was started, with meetings held in their home during the first year, and until the first church building was built. Rosina died at Horton, Missouri, in 1933. one son and three daughters also preceded him in death. About three years ago, he remarried, and he and his wife, Rhoda, made their home at Willow Springs, Missouri. He is a retired machinist for the Santa Fe Railway.

He is survived by his wife, Rhoda, of the home; four daughters: Mrs. Olive Woodward and Mrs. Gladys Hoss of Independence, Missouri, Mrs. Florence Stith of Butler, Missouri, and Mrs. Octa Capps of Elsberry, Missouri; four sons; Alva of Orosto, California, Clifford of Ash Fork, Arizona, Clarence of Barstow, California, and Walter of the U. S. Navey; thirteen grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the George C. Carson Funeral home. Elders Claude A. Smith and Arthur E. Stoft were in charge. A graveside service was held at Adrian, Missouri.

Services Held Wednesday For Howard Brasel, Dies Sunday Afternoon At Passavant Hospital

    Howard Brasel, retired farmer and lifelong resident of Virginia, passed away Sunday at 6 p.m. at the Passavant Hospital, Jacksonville, where he had been a patient for ten days. Death followed a lingering illness.
    Casket bearers were Roy Jokisch, Ralph Jokisch, Orville Jokisch, Clarence Jokisch, Henry Witte, William Witte and Geo. Rexroat.
    Flowers were cared for by Miss Iva Lancaster, Mesdames Edwin Mefford, Walter Huston, Jack Charles and Herman Reichert.
    Mr. Brasel, the son of David and Mary Ann Long Brasel, was born on Nov. 30, 1878. He was married to Olive Young at Virginia, Oct. 31, 1902.
    He is survived by his wife, one brother, Frank Brasel of Beardstown and a number of nieces and nephews.
    Mr. Brasel was a member of the Methodist church in Virginia. He retired from farming about five years ago.
    The body was brought from the Gillham Funeral Home to the family residence in Grand Villa Tuesday p.m.
    Funeral services were held in the Methodist church at 2:30 with Rev. H. F. Higgins and Rev. L. R. Cronkhite officiating. Geo. McDonald accompanied by Mrs. Lyle Turner, sang "The Lord Prayer."

Hazel Irene Briggs Rites Fri. At Church

    Largely attended last rites for Miss Hazel Irene Briggs, 15, who died accidentally from carbon monoxide gas in a car at Chandlerville Wednesday morning, were held at the Christian church here Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock, with the Rev. L. R. Cronkhite officiating. Miss Celia Greenwood gave several numbers at the organ.
    Flowers were cared for by girls of the 8th grade.

    Miss Briggs was born at Jacksonville, March 21, 1931. She died at the age of 15 years, 9 months, and 10 days. She was a pupil of the 8th grade. She leaves to mourn her death, her mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Briggs and three sisters, Mrs. Josephine Doerr, Jackie Lou and Mary Margaret; also her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Sherrill of this city and Mrs. Margaret Briggs of Jacksonville.

Martin Briggs, Local Farmer, Dies Wednesday

    John Martin Briggs, 69-year-old farmer of the Virginia community, died at 12:23 a.m. Wednesday in Our Saviour's hospital. He had been taken to the hospital only two days before.
    Briggs was a well known farmer in this vicinity most of his life. He was born in Cass County March 29, 1883.
    He is survived by his wife, Amelia Briggs, and a sister, Mrs. Earl McElroy, of Bound Brook, N.J.
    The remains were taken to the Massie Funeral Home in this city. Services will be held at the funeral home at 2 o'clock this afternoon. The Rev. Floyd Brewer of the Methodist church in this city will officiate.

Services Held For D. Brockhouse, Retired Farmer Passes At Residence Saturday

    Dietrick Brockhouse, retired farmer who passed away at his home early Saturday morning at 2:45 o'clock, was born near Neelyville, Illinois, September 10, 1863. He was the son of Dietrick and Mary Vortman Brockhouse.
    His father passed away when he was ten years of age. Residing with the mother, he took up the occupation of farming. On September 5, 1888, he was married to Miss Emma Crone. After marriage, they resided on a farm near Bluffs, Illinois for about three and one-half years, then coming to this county to take up residence on the old Crone homestead where they resided until a little more than five years ago. Since that time they have resided at "Breezy Point", northwest of Virginia. To this union one daughter, Della B. Dinwiddie, was born.
    The deceased served as director of the Farmers' National and People's Bank of Virginia for many years. He also served as director of Campbell school, Dist. 33, for more than forty years.
    In early youth he united with the Evangelical Lutheran church, but in later years attended the Presbyterian church.
    Surviving are the wife, the daughter, the son-in-law, L. L. Dinwiddie, one sister, Mrs. H. C. Knoeppel of Bluffs, Illinois, one foster granddaughter, Emilee Brockhouse, a nephew, whom they reared, Albert Brockhouse, and several other nieces and nephews.
    Funeral services were held at the late residence on Sunday afternoon at 4:30 o'clock, with Rev. W. S. Neely of the local Presbyterian church in charge.
    Musical selections were rendered by a quartette composed of Mrs. C. E. Ericson, Miss Catherine Collins, Massrs. C. R. Wilson and M. M. Cruft.
    Floral tributes were cared for by Mrs. Sue Lancaster, Miss Iva Lancaster, Mesdames Fred Savage, V. E. Robertson, Roy Jokisch, Rolla Rexroat, Carroll Knight and Rachel Ross.
    Casket bearers were Carl Ericson, Charles Plummer, V. E. Robertson, Roy Jokisch, George Lang, Fred D. Savage and George Rexroat, Jr.
    Burial was made in Walnut Ridge Cemetery.

   Rojean L. Brockhouse, 74 years, of Virginia, IL died Wednesday, January 18, 2006 at her residence.
   She was born October 29, 1931 in Chandlerville, IL; the daughter of Forrest and Mary Duckwiler Largent. She married Alan Armstrong and later married Gene Brockhouse on May 29, 1958 in Chandlerville, IL and he survives.
   She is also survived by her mother, Mary Largent of Virginia; three sons, Bruce Armstrong of Metropolis, Robert Armstrong (wife, Sharon) of Metropolis, and Ronald Brockhouse (wife, Mary Ann) of Virginia; two daughters, Mary Wienhoff of Chatham and Leigh Ann Allen (husband, Tom) of Ashland; 10 grandchildren, Brandi Siders (husband, Cary) of Virginia, Jared Armstrong (wife, Krystal) of Metropolis, Blake Armstrong of Los Angeles, CA, Ross Brockhouse of Industry, Brett Brockhouse of Virginia, Zachary and Jacob Wienhoff, both of Chatham, and Margaret, Quinn, and Julianna Allen, all of Ashland; and a great grandson, Logan Armstrong of Metropolis. She was preceded in death by her father and a step-uncle, Garland Armstrong, who was raised with her in the family home.
   Mrs. Brockhouse was a 1949 graduate of Chandlerville High School and a homemaker. She was a devoted member of the First Presbyterian Church in Virginia where she formerly served as an Elder, Deacon, Trustee, and Sunday School superintendent. She was active in the church's Service Guild, K.O.G.G., and Christian Women's Fellowship. An avid St. Louis Cardinal fan, she enjoyed reading and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchild. 
   Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday,January 22, 2006 at the First Presbyterian Church in Virginia with burial at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia. Friends may call from 4:00 to 6:00 PM Saturday at the Massie-Buchanan Funeral Home in Virginia. Memorial gifts are suggested to First Presbyterian Church or Cass-Schuyler Area Hospice.

Mrs. John Broeker Dies

    Mrs. Josephine Broeker, who observed her 77th birthday anniversary Saturday, died at 4:45 o'clock this morning at Schmitt Memorial hospital where she had been a patient since December 17.
    She was the widow of John Broeker who operated the Broeker drug store at 114 Washington street from 1902 until the time of his death.
    The body was taken to the Cline Funeral home to be prepared for burial. Friends may call between 7:30 and 9 o'clock tomorrow night at the funeral home.
    Burial will be in the family lot in the city cemetery in the Cline perpetual care section.
    Mrs. Broeker wrote her own obituary to be held until after her death. It is published here as she wrote it.
    "Mrs. John Broeker, Josephine, was the daughter of Joseph S. and Judith Ann Kenworthy. Her father was an Illinois soldier in the Civil War and later married and moved his family to Lacygne, Kansas, Linn county, where she was born.
    "She was married to John Broeker in 1895 in Lincoln, Ill. Her home had been in Beardstown ever since.
    "She was a member of the Congregational Church over 44 years, and of the Woman's club more than 37 years continuous.
    "Her husband, parents, sisters and brothers preceded her in death. Cousins are the only surviving relatives."

Charles Brown Dies Suddenly

    Charles Brown, husband of Mrs. Nina Neistradt Brown, 1017 Jefferson street, died suddenly at 8:30 o'clock this morning of a heart attack while at work at the Pennsylvania railroad offices in Chicago where he was employed as a civil engineer.
    Funeral services will be held at 3 o'clock Thursday afternoon at Ringa funeral home in Chicago.
    Mr. Brown visited here four days during the Thanksgiving holidays and appeared in excellent health. His mother, who was 86, preceded him in death two months ago.
    He was married to Nina Niestradt August 19, 1944.
    Mrs. Brown has been caring for her mother, Mrs. John Niestradt, 86, who is critically ill at her home, having recently been dismissed from the hospital. Word of the death of Mr. Brown will be kept from her temporarily because of her critical condition.
    Mrs. Brown will be accompanied to Chicago tomorrow by Mrs. M. C. Brockman to attend funeral services.

Eula D. Brown - 1903-2003 - Chandlerville

    Eula D. Brown, 100, of Chandlerville, died Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2002, at Havana Healthcare Center.
    She was born April 26, 1903, in Lynchburg Township, the daughter of Eugene Daniel and Alice Sarff. She married D. Ernest Brown on Aug.
25, 1932, and he preceded her in death Oct. 14, 1992.
    She is survived by several cousins.  Mrs. Brown was a teacher for 22 years in Bath, Kilbourne and Havana. She was a member of Fairview Methodist Church in Bath, AARP and Mason County Retired Teacher's Association.
    Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Hurley Funeral Home in Havana with burial at Fairview Cemetery in Bath. Visitation will be one hour prior to services Friday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Fairview Cemetery Fund or Chaddock Boys School.

     RICHARD B. BROWN - Chandlerville, Illinois: Richard B. Brown, 83, of Chandlerville died Monday, November 20, 2000, at Heritage Manor South in Beardstown.
     He was born June 17, 1917, in Burkesville, Cumberland County, Kentucky, the son of Albert "Buck" and Orlena Riley Brown. He married Freda M. Cox in 1937 in Bowling Green, Missouri.
     A son, Richard Allen Brown, and two sisters, Lois Eller Brown Cox and Earry Geraldine "Jude" Brown Johnson, preceded him in death.
     Mr. Brown served as caretaker of the Cherry Circle Gun Club in rural Bath, Illinois from 1942 to 1998, retiring due to an illness. He also was a livestock and grain farmer and conducted some commercial fishing. He had attended Oakdale School in Virginia, Illinois and was a member of the Chandlerville Baptist Church.
     Survivors: wife, Freda; a son, Roy Lee (wife, Sharla) Brown of Chandlerville; two daughters, Eula (husband, Al) Baker of Kilbourne, Illinois and Donna (husband, Ronnie) Finch of Springfield, Illinois; nine grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; a brother Norman (wife, Edna) Brown of Petersburg, Illinois; a sister Mary Dimple (husband, Ray) Cox of Tallula, Illinois; and several nieces and nephews.
     He was buried on November 22, 2000 at Chandlerville Cemetery, Chandlerville, Cass County, Illinois.

    William Franklin Brown passed away at his home in this city last Saturday, March 9, pneumonia being the cause of death.
    Deceased was born in the sate of Maine, March 23, 1835, and was 76yrs., 11 months, and 14 days of age. Early in life he enlisted in the service of the Union Army, as a private in Co. M, second regiment of the cavalry as a volunteer and served for three years and three months, at the end of which time he received an honorable discharge.
    In June 1868, he was married to Miss Mary Jane Mibbs of Tazewell Co., who survives. To this union were born eleven children, seven of whom mourn his death. They are Mrs. Martha HEUSTED, Fred BROWN, Mrs. Mary WEAVER, Mrs. Ruth DRAPER, Arch BROWN, Mrs. Ethel MULLEN, and Mrs. Nellie CLARK.
    During a recent revival meeting at the Nazarene Holiness Church in this city, under the preaching of Rev. Geo. W. BOYD, the deceased professed the christian faith and since been a very devout Christian and during his last days of his illness professed an imbiding faith and was ever ready to meet the Lord and Master.
    The funeral services were held from the Nazarene Holiness Church at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon, Rev. G. W. BOYD officiating. The burial services were in charge of the GAR Post. Interment was made in Walnut Ridge cemetery.

John Buck Age 77, Dies

    John Albert Buck, 77 years old, died at the Williams Nursing Home here at 5 o'clock this morning following a lingering illness.
    Funeral services will be held at the Cline Funeral Home in Arenzville at 11 o'clock Thursday morning. Services will be in charge of Steve Reining. Burial will be in the Clark cemetery about four miles west of Virginia.

    Mr. Buck was born near Arenzville, the son of the late Jasper and Mary Ann Buck. He is survived by one sister, Mrs. William Kircher of Arenzville. One brother Edward and a sister Mrs. John Huss, preceded him in death as did his parents.
    Decedent was a farmer most of his life but resided in Beardstown the past several years.

In The Tomb

    Mary Morrison Buck was born in England, March 12, 1840, and died at her home northeast of Arenzville Sunday evening. Funeral services took place from the Union church in Arenzville Wednesday morning, Rev. Mr. Schaeffer of the Hickory church officiating. The deceased came to this county in 1844 with her parents. She is survived by two sons, John and Edward, at home and two daughters, Mesdames W. J. Kircher of Arenzville and John Huss of Beardstown, also by two sisters, Mesdames Joseph Davis of Monroe and Amos Buxton of Jules, and by four grandchildren. She was a faithful member of the C. P. church to which she united in 1870.

Walter A. Buck Dies

    Walter A. Buck, 64, formerly of this city died this morning in Jacksonville where he had resided the past two years.
    He was born May 30, 1885, in Beardstown and had lived here most of his life.
    Mr. Buck started work on the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy railroad on January 16, 1909, here and held various jobs as laborer, power plant engineer, stationary fireman and, in fact, worked at most of the jobs available here until his retirement September 4, 1948.
    He and his family resided at 1218 Lafayette street, which home Mr. Buck sold to Karl Schmidt when he moved to Jacksonville.
    He is survived by his wife, Lena; a daughter, Mrs. Virginia Hawkins, and one grandson, George Hawkins.
    Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

Walter A. Buck To Be Buried Here

    Funeral services for Walter A. Buck, former resident, who died suddenly at 11 o'clock yesterday morning at his home, 1503 South East street, Jacksonville will be held at 2:30 o'clock Monday afternoon at the Gillham funeral home in Jacksonville. The Rev. C. W. Leonhard will be in charge.
    The body will be brought to Beardstown for burial in the Cline Perpetual Care section of the city cemetery. Pallbearers will be members of the "Q" veterans organization of this city. The grave services will be at 4 o'clock Monday afternoon.
    Mr. Buck was stricken yesterday morning after he walked into the rear lot of his home where he expected to prepare the garden for planting. He died soon afterwards.
    He was born May 30, 1885 near Beardstown, the son of Stephen and Martha Waggle Buck. His marriage to Lena Powers was solemnized December 23, 1916 in St. Louis.
    Surviving are his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Virginia Hawkins of Ludington, Mich., one grandson, George, one brother, Stephen Buck of Keokuk, Ia., and two sisters, Mrs. Ella Marvin of Kewanee and Mrs. Lillian Menge of Chicago.
    Mr. Buck was a member of the Baptist church and the Burlington Veterans' organization.

Funeral Services Are Held for Walter E. Buck

    Funeral services were held at 4 o'clock Saturday afternoon for Walter E. Buck at the late home, 304 W. 4th St.
    The Rev. Alfred E. Cole, pastor of the Methodist church was in charge. The Rev. A. E. Beddoes, of the Congregational church assisted by quoting several poems, among them favorites of the deceased.
    Miss Johanna Brodman sang, "Oh Love That Wil't Not Let Me Go." Miss Hazel Yockey was at the piano.
    Flowers were cared for by Mrs. Park Jenkins, Mrs. Vern Von Fossen, Miss Jessie Wise and Miss Elda Greve.
    Burial was in the Hines family lot in the City cemetery with F. A. Yockey, Homer Coleman, Park Jenkins, F. J. Kuhl, Carl Harre and Dr. T. G. Charles acting as pallbearers.
    Obituary
    Walter E. Buck, son of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Van Buren Buck, was born in this city, Dec. 28, 1884. He grew to manhood in this city, attended the local schools graduating with the class of 1901. Later he attended the University of Illinois.
    For six years he taught in the country schools of Cass county and was principal of the Central school building in this city from 1907 to 1914. From 1914 he held the position of Cass County Superintendent of Schools until his death.
    In addition to his position of County Superintendent of Schools he was manager of the Illinois State Reading Circle; a member of the Board of Legislative committee of the South Central Division of Illinois State Teachers' Association and was Assistant Principal of the State Fair Boys' school for the past 12 years. He was a member of the Schmitt Memorial Board of Directors, a member of the executive Council of the P.T.A., a member of the Rotary Club and the Masonic Order.
    He was a life long member of the Methodist church and had served for a number of years as chairman of the Board of Trustees of that institution.
    He was united in marriage to Miss Mabel Hines, 715 Washington street, this city, August 17, 1916. She survives him. Other survivors are his brother, Harry Buck of this city, and his mother-in-law, Mrs. Harrison Hines who has made her home with her daughter since the death of Mr. Hines.
    Two sisters, Mrs. Alice Duchardt and Mrs. Theresa Daily preceded him in death together with three brothers, Marcus Buck and two who died in infancy.

    Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Shiloh church for Amos H. Buxton, aged resident, who passed away at his home in this city Thursday evening. Rev. V. M. Hill officiating.
    Music was furnished by Mrs. Geo. Dour, Mrs. V. M. Hill, Mrs. Poure and Mrs. Lloyd Leonard who sang a group of favorite songs accompanied by Mrs. Donald Bierhaus.
   Burial was made in Walnut Ridge cemetery with the following casket bearers: John Kruse, Milt, John and Ed Bierhaus, John Carls and Frank Waddell.
    Amos Henry Buxton passed away March 17th at his home in Virginia at the age of 82 years, 11 months and 21 days. The length of years were determined that he could not pass, and he fell asleep, the rest which follows a wealth of years in service. The deceased was born near Bluff Springs, March 26, 1849. He was married to Eliza H. Morrison, August 30, 1878 and to this union two children were born, Mrs. Laura Ethel Schall and Albert S. Buxton. Four grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. Tacie Buxton and Mrs. Margaret Yeck mourn his demise.
    Mr. Buxton professed faith in Christ, and for a number of years has been a regular member of the Shiloh Cumberland Presbyterian church. He remained a faithful member and a devoted Christian to the end. His remarkable character was very highly esteemed by all who came in contact with him, for to know him was to love him.
    The community and this church have suffered an irreparable loss. The Providence that deprives us of his association and helpfulness is beyond the finite mind, but some day we'll understand.

Mrs. E. Buxton, Dies Here Monday After Long Illness

    Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Shiloh Cumberland Presbyterian church at 2:00 o'clock for Mrs. Eliza Buxton, 87, who died Saturday at the Virginia Hotel where she had been living for the past several months. Rev. Wm. H. Jones was in charge of the services.
    Mrs. Floyd Leonhard and Mrs. George Dour sang "In The Garden," and "The Old Rugged Cross" accompanied on the piano by Miss Lee Edda Schall.
    Interment was in Walnut Ridge cemetery.
    Mrs. Buxton was born December 5, 1857, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Morrison. In 1878 she was married to Amos Buxton. Two children were born, Mrs. Laura Schall of this city and Albert Buxton of Peoria, both of whom survive, together with four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Mr. Buxton's death occurred in 1931.
    Casketbearers were Floyd Leonhard, Harry Schall, Lou Wedeking, John Carls, George Dour and Donald Bierhaus.

Funeral Rites Held Here For Former Resident

    Funeral services for Mrs. Myrtle Brech Buxton, 67 of Peoria, a former resident of this vicinity, were held Tuesday, at the Massie funeral home at 1:30 p.m. The Rev. W. O. Talley, pastor of Shiloh Cumberland Presbyterian church, officiating.
    Mrs. Otto Dour presided at the organ and played "In The Garden" and "The Lord's Prayer" during the service.
    Pallbearers were John Dour, Donald Bierhaus, Paul Giger, George Dour, Aldon Miller and Floyd Leonhard.
    Arranging the flowers were Mrs. George Dour, Mrs. Donald Bierhaus and Mrs. Paul Giger.
    Burial was made in Walnut Ridge cemetery.
    Mrs. Buxton was born Dec. 16, 1888, near Virginia, the daughter of John C. and Rosa Bierhaus Brech and passed away Dec. 8, 1956 in Peoria. The deceased spent her early life in the Shiloh community. She had resided in Peoria the past fifteen years, and was employed by the YWCA in that city.
    In 1909 she was united in marriage to Albert S. Buxton, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Glenn Buxton of Peoria and Wayne Buxton of Springfield; one daughter, Mrs. Alberta Utzinger of Peoria and three grandchildren.
