History of Townships
P.18
Township 17, Range 8
One of the first settlers in this Township was James Dais, who came into it in 1822, and made an improvement where Mr. Travis Elmore now lives, at the head of Little Indian Creek. He sold out to a man by the name of Strawder Ball, who was succeeded by Isaac Bennett. Bennett sold to Rev. William Crow, a prominent Baptist minister, and an early settler in this neighborhood. Crow entered the property about 1825 or 1826.
Eli Cox was the first settler of the Township, if not in the County. If we count from 1818, when he first came into the County, he is the first; if we count from 1820, when he made a permanent settlement in the grove afterwards named after him, there was one family in the County about the same time.
Joshua Crow made improvements and entered land in the southwest part of the County somewhere about 1823. William Cooper a negro who had a white wife, made a settlement in the same locality about the same time. He was allowed the privileges of the ballot by mutual consent of the settlers, on the ground that he had done service in the Revolutionary War, and was a good citizen. Stephen Short settled in the southwest corner about the same time. His house, however, stand now on the Morgan County side of the line. He raised four sons, whom we now count as old settlers: James, Benjamin, George and Albert. Stephen Lee settled in Panther Grove about 1830. Tilman Hornbuckle, however, preceded him several years in this place. Dr. Stockton settled in the same grove about the time of the deep snow. The prairie part of this Township began to settle up about 1836. John Miller, James Thompson, David Barr, settled about this time out on the prairie.
Stephen Short was the first Justice of the Peace. Rev. William Crow preached the first sermon. Isaac Ballou and Rubie Foster were the first married. Matthew Marsh put out the first hedge, about 1852. The soil of this Township is good, and the land is well watered on the south by Little Indian, and on the north by Panther and Coxs Creeks.
The Methodists have two church houses, and the Catholics one.
Township 18, Range 8
The first settlers in this Township were George and John Wilson, in 1824; William Daniels in 1825; Bartlett Conyers, John Lucas, John B. Witty, Robert Hawthorn, about 1826; Samuel Smith and William H. Hinchel, 1840-1842. The first school was taught on the Sabbath, by John Wilson, where some of the children received their first lessons in the primer. Kitty Wilson is still living with her son, James S. Daniels. She is the oldest of the first settlers now living, being seventy-six. The first meeting-house was built on Middle Creek by the Methodists. The first sermon was preached by Robert Leiper, a Christian preacher. The first child born was Lucinda Daniels, in 1828. The first marriage was Miles Hamilton and Barbara Baeger. That portion of this Township lying in Cass County was originally almost entirely prairie. Soil, black loam and very fertile.
